Update: The Cox technician who came said the phone system is broken, so Mom had to buy a new one. Then he disconnected me while I was online. Now how stupid is that?

When you have a over the Internet type phone system and are having problems with the phone and a technician is working on your line to see if it's the phone or the cable...you should expect him to be working on the internet. I don't see it as him being stupid at all. Maybe next time you shouldn't try to get online during a service call like that and you will not have to worry about getting disconnected.
