I promise guys, you can get just as good a QB (IMO better), by waiting till the 3rd or 4th round and getting McCarron, Mettenberger, Boyd, or Murray for much cheaper. And i you don't like him, you can still get Marcus Mariota next year. Please don't bet our future on this UCF guy.

 

Listen: Teddy and Manziel. Those are the only 2 QBs who deserve to be drafted in the first round this year, and I think the only two who will. Forget Blake, he wouldn't be a top 4-QB if Winston were eligible and Mariota were coming out. 

 

You are contradicting yourself, Johnny. "Once in a generation" means the best of the best - guys like Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, and Drew Brees. The Jaguars can't afford to go another year with a bad quarterback. This simply is not a good year for picking an elite quarterback because it is a weak class. In addition, you are crazy if you think Murray, Mettenberger, and McCarron are on the same level as Bridgewater, Manziel, and Mariota. How can a third round quarterback be any better than the #3 overall pick?

So if a QB had 5 tds to 10 ints, that wouldnt concern you? Stats are a part of the puzzle. They matter to an extent, especially if the player has not played a difficult schedule.


Bortles has the proto-typical size and arm, but his numbers are not the best. He is a second round prospect being propped up as a top 10 pick because of the drop off after Bridgewater.

Listen, Bortles is a better prospect than Manziel in the same way that Gabbert is a better prospect than Manziel.

And by that I mean, sure Bortles has better NFL size, NFL build, etc, just like Gabbert did when he came out.

 

If you let these QBs actual body of work in college speak for itself, Manziel has done more at A&M against far superior competition, than Bortles could ever dream at UCF.

Sorry, you must have heard me wrong. I said Jaguars would be just as good off with Murray, Mettenberger, Boyd, and McCarron, as they would with Bortles in particular.

I do agree that both Teddy and Manziel are on another level. And I DO think we should get one of them in the first.

I just don't see giving a top-3 pick to the type of QB like Blake who we could find in almost every draft somewhere.

It's just difficult though, and forgive me for being a broken record, but it's difficult with these small-school guys to get a good hold of them.

 

I remember for example watching Bortles last game against SMU very closely, being very interested to see how he'd perform. Simply because I knew that was the only team that both he and my favorite draft-prospect 'Manziel' both played this year.

Here's the quick QB stats against SMU:

Manziel was 14/21 for 244-yards

Manziel had 12-carries for 102-yards

Oh, and keep in mind that Johnny did all this while sitting on the bench after only one set of plays in the 3rd quarter.
 
And so I scratch my head and say...If Manziel were in Bortle's conference, playing against cupcakes week in and week out, would he have 500, maybe 600-yards every game? Would he have a 92 or perhaps a 95 QBR all year? 
 
I admit, I just dunno man. 

Oh, and one more thing to chew on that makes it difficult for me to think of Bortles as a top 3. And I may be wrong about this, but other than Alex Smith a few years back, and that's 1 single quarterback, can anyone even remember a small-conference QB going in the top 10 of any NFL draft in the last 7 or 8-years? Anyone? And people somehow think we'll have no less than 3 small-school/small-conference guys(Teddy, Bortles, and Carr) all going in the top 10 this year?...I dunno, i just dunno.

I will be watching his bowl game though if that's any consolation :yes:

He and Teddy both play in a BCS conference...how many more times will Manziel fans use the conference argument to try and prop him up and downgrade prospects they know nothing about?...I dunno, I just dunno

Not top 10, but maybe in the first round.

The game against SMU is not a great example, UCF went up there and struggled because it was like 10 degress during the game. If you don't think cold effects the way you play it does. The ball will be more solid and hurt a ton more when it hits you. Couple that with UCF doesn't play many cold weather games and isn't used to it well there you go.

A scout's job is to determine why a quarterback had 5 touchdowns and 10 interceptions by breaking down every play in that game.

Tell me how Louisville, which used to be in the Big East, is still in a BCS conference, and will be in the ACC next year, is a small school. If you want to talk about small schools stick to the second round.

I'm reserving judgement on Bortles till after the bowl game tonight. From what I've seen so far, I like him. I am really looking forward to it as much as the Louisville and A&M bowl games. There's a decent chance that Dave may pick him.

People forget that UCF doesn't get the raw talent that (actually smaller number of student wise) schools like TAMU and FSU, Florida, etc. get. Bortles is the reason UCF is in its 1st ever BCS bowl. Dwell on that for a second. Culpepper didn't get em to a BCS bowl, but Bortles did.

 

And he put Tyler Gabbert on the bench, and eventually off the team. This achievement alone should make him super lauded in the eyes of all cognizant Jaguar fans. The great Gabbert 2.0, so humiliated he quit the team. http://collegefootballtalk.nbcsports.com...leave-ucf/ Hail!
