Assuming the Texans pick Teddy Bridgewater, which is most likely to happen, and we are still tied with four teams, would you do this: Trade down with the Browns, whose current placement is #5 after the Raiders, for a second round pick so that we have two top 10 picks in Round 2? Or even better, we can trade with whoever has the #8 or #9 pick (depending on if we are 2 or 3) for the #35 pick if that team is a willing partner. (Sorry, I can't remember who it is.) That way we stay in the top 10 and pick early in Round 2 while keeping our #40 pick. My math might be off a little bit, but you get the idea here. I would do it if nobody else before Minnesota wants my favorite player not named Teddy Bridgewater, but stay at 2 or 3 if there is any reason to be concerned about someone else snatching him up.

I'd think about it, but I'd try to get more than that.

What else do you want besides a second rounder?

another 3rd (unlikely) or 4th (likely)

Yeah, anlther third would be nice, but we already have three fourths.

The 4th are good ammo to move up into 2 or 3, especially if you can accept next year's 2 or 3.
I'd be happy with trading down. But if we trade down into the top 10, I'd have to assume we wouldn't be drafting a QB with the 1st pick. So if we lay at #8 or #9. What position do we pick? The top pass rushers may be gone. I get the impression they wouldn't take a CB that high. Don't think we'd draft a tackle again. The other positions are a reach that high. A WR is the best I can come up with considering no pass rusher available. I guess it's possible they make this move and still draft a QB, but not sure I recall it ever happening. So if they don't want a QB in the top 10, and are out of reach of a premier pass rusher, why even stay in the top 10?

The Ravens traded out of a top 10 pick, with the Jags nonetheless, and drafted Flacco.

Depending on how other teams grade him, Johnny Manziel might drop far enough. He seems to be all over the place from top five to second round.

Was Flacco the best quarterback in that draft?

Right.
OUT of the top 10. That is my point. Why would you risk missing out on a QB you have as a top 10 talent by trading down a couple spots? Just hard to believe you would make that move.

It all comes down to getting value for your pick. Sure the Seahawks could have drafted Wilson in the first round, but if you did your homework and graded the prospects correctly you can still get your player at a later point in the draft.
The Ravens did it right. They got their player and extra picks in the process.

Read my OP again. I suggested moving down a few spots
if we are confident no other 4-12 team wants somebody on our board. Do you have a problem with reading comprehension?

You never mentioned anything about 4-12 in your post. You specifically named #5, #8, and #9 which are all top 10 picks. Not sure what I'm misreading here.
But how possibly could you be sure a quarterback you have rated as #2 overall wouldn't go in the top 12??? And if you WE'RE sure. It's an EXTREMELY risky move when your talking about risking losing your QB of the future.

I was saying if all of the 4-11 teams lose (which makes them all 4-12, of course) we can trade with another team with the same record, using 5 and 8 as examples.

I agree with this. But the Ravens likely didn't grade Flacco as a top 10 pick. So they got OUT of the top ten. JW's scenario has us trading down INTO the top 10, meaning, if they pick a QB there they initially passed on a QB they had rated as a top 10 pick (which is typical 1st day starter future of franchise territory). Just don't know if this has ever happened before.
Yea it's possible to predict the draft. But there comes a point where risk outweighs reward. I don't know the details of the Wilson pick, but my guess is they didn't have his rated as a top 10 pick either.

My trade idea is based on the NFL's rule for tied teams: the first to pick in Round 1 is the last to pick in Round 2. Therefore, I would never suggest trading out of the top 8.

OK. My head is spinning. I just looked at the standings and I think I see where you're going. There are six 4-11 teams, and one 3-12 team. And with only that information (not bothering looking at who plays who), there could be seven 4-12 teams when the season ends. So if this is true, and we trade down with any of those 4-12 teams in the 1st round, we could flip our draft position in the 2nd round from #8 to #2 (assuming we got the #2 pick). Or something like that.
Either way, there's nothing we're even disputing here. All I said was if they trade down in the first like you said, it's likely not for a QB.

3-12: Redskins
4-11: Browns, Jaguars, Raiders, Falcons, Buccaneers
So there can be up to six 4-12 teams. The Vikings are 4-10-1, so they cannot be in the 4-12 rotation.
We have so many needs any position we pick in the first round will fix something.

But if we're picking in the top 10, it's kinda gotta be a QB or pass rusher right now.
