One whole draft away. Just a new quarterback will not fix everything. Actually we need two more drafts to get to the playoffs, but I have no doubt next year will be much better.

This year Babin, at 33, has averaged less than 2 tackles per game and has 5.5 sacks. His production can be replaced with developing youth. I appreciate that he would take a paycut to stay, for like of the team culture and community. But, his production would not have justified his raise to a $6m 2014 base salary anyway. Another year...maybe, depending upon who they take in the draft.

Considering his age and his production he'd have to be a minimum salary guy to even stay in the league at this point.

 

Like I said, of course he is talking a great game about how bought in he is, he wants to keep the money flowing for one more year before the NFL realizes he's just another old player that doesn't make a difference.

Him staying depends on the draft. We are not going out in FA and getting a guy like Greg Hardy. Caldwell won't do that. If we have an "elite" pr fall to us Babin is gone.

We could easily get to the playoffs next year depending on how the draft/FA goes and if the young guys keep developing. Teams make major turnarounds every single year.

The crucial facet will be getting a QB.

 

This team would need years of top 5 picks to make it into the playoffs with someone like Henne at the helm. With a Russell Wilson or Andrew Luck, though, this year's team would be nipping at the colts' heels and probably be considered a contender in 2014.

Exactly. Blackmon/Joeckel coming back should help out a lot depending on how straight Blackmon decides to fly. Hopefully he's watching from how how this team is progressing and decides to get on board with giving 100% and not getting himself in any more trouble. Adding Ace getting better and a new QB should make the offense quite nice next year.

 

The defense is up and down but still improving. A pass rusher should help that out pretty good too. We're definitely not far away from contending.

Yeah, I love to hear that from Babin, but I don't think he makes our roster in 2014.

I appreciate him wanting to stick around.  I'd consider it if he was willing to play at or near veteran minimum, but that's assuming we get no significant help in Free Agency or the draft. 

 

Having said that, its not likely we come away from Free Agency without at least one well-paid defensive end.  Not with the depth of pass rushers coming into Free Agency.  Not with the need we have for one.  Not with the amount of money we have to spend.

Well, yeah, because he won't be making $5.5 million next year regardless of where he's playing. With that said, it's good to hear the consistently positive feedback from current players. They clearly like playing under this regime.

One thing I like about Babin is that he seems to be the guy who amps the defense.

Oh, its definitely a good sign. I won't deny that. I just kinda chuckle at that other post I quoted that said definitively that "the Jags will win a SB under Bradley" which is being said after the Babin news. Just seems kinda silly and grandeous thing to say over something thats really not all that big a deal.
