IMO greatest Jags ever go: Boselli, Fred, Jimmy, MJD, Brunell.

MJD made a huge impact splitting carries and returning kicks his first 3 years, and was one of the best feature backs in the league for another 3 until injuries derailed his career.

Quote:Again, I think a case could be made for top 5, but even still the guy said he was an all-time great Jaguar. I don't know how anyone top 10 or 5 in their franchise could not make that cut. If you want to argue that being a top 10 or 5 player for the Jags doesn't mean much, well go ahead I guess, but I think MJD is an all-time great Jaguar. You say he was elite for 2 years, I think he was great almost the entire time, most of it while defenses ignored everybody else on the field.

I don't think a few years is long enough to put a player in what's suppose to be a hall of fame group for the franchise. We're talking about a team that hasn't won a single division title one playoff win and no championships during this time period. How many players do we want to induct during the first 14 years? Ill be cool with adding to the pride when we do something worth recognizing or someone does it for a long time like Freddy did.
Quote:He split carries his first few years. I think that cost him some numbers, but to call his prime short lived is a bit unfair. Most running backs don't last long.

Agreed most running backs don't last long that's what made Taylor special and pride worthy.

That's fine if he's willing to take a reduced role he can contribute and maybe he can thrive like Taylor did. Ill say this if he can thrive like Taylor did in a reduce role for another 3-4 years then you can have the pride talk but that's unlikely he's barley holding up now

He came on strong midway through a lost year. He got hurt again, yeah, and 3-4 years is probably asking too much, but I'm pulling for MJD to get a one-year, modest money deal to be part of a platoon with some combination of Todman, Robinson and/or whoever joins the team this offseason.

Don't get me wrong I like MJD and always pull for him I just don't see him on the same level as Taylor and that's what I expect for an all time great jaguar running back

I agree.
MJD has 11,000 + all-purpose yards and 80+ TDs.. I'd say that's pretty impressive (IMO). Would love to see him hit that century mark in TDs as a Jag.

He's not on the same level as Taylor was in his prime. Even in his own prime, he was never the back that Fred was. He's not an all-time great for the team, and not someone I'd realistically expect to see in the Pride anytime soon, if ever, but he is a player that I'd love to see back in Jacksonville for a year or two to round out his career as part of a rotation with one or two younger backs. If it happens, cool. If the Pats, Falcons or Chargers want to spend a lot more on another aging back who may or may not contribute, then they can have him, and I hope their hunch about him is right. That's all.
Oh how I wish Jimmy Smith would've stayed one more year. The Jags would've walked into the playoffs in 06 with Smith, Taylor, and MJD on the same team.

there's rumor he would have been suspended for the season due to his coke problem.

I understand why everyone favors Fred over Maurice, but saying MJD isn't an all-time great for us is kinda disappointing to hear. He put up crazy numbers and plays while Fred was here, and then continued to do so after he left(with below average talent around the whole team). He was the main weapon on our offense, and was the #1 priority to stop for a defense. If MJD isn't inducted into the pride, that'll be pretty sad to accept.

X 2........but I believe they'll both be back. Meester less likely if we get a center thru free agency. If we draft one, next year will be his last. Its hard to believe that he was under center for Brunell. Amazing.
I soured on MJD the past season or two, but seeing him start the season the way he did brought me back to all the good times he brought me, and the Jags. It was painful to watch. I'm glad he's gotten back on track a bit as of late. I'd love to see him stay another year or two in a Fred-Taylor-end-of-Jags-run role. I think he's shown he can still offer a bit and I've realized I'm just too garsh darn sentimental for this game of football. <_<

As for Brad, I really hope he retires at the end of this season. His play was able to be compensated for for the past couple of seasons, but its just not plausible to keep him around anymore. He's one of the great unsung heroes in Jags history and a great guy as well. I can't imagine the Jags paying him for another year of onfield service, and I just can't even begin to imagine him in another uniform. It was hard watching Freddy finish his career in a Pats uniform, and I hate watching Daryl out there in Baltimore now. I really hope Brad's satisfied with the career he's had and the legacy he'll leave behind and spare my poor nostalgic heart the pain of seeing him flail around out there for another team. Regardless, it doesn't really seem possible that he finds his way back onto the Jags roster next year, so I hope he gets the proper sendoff from the Jags faithful that he deserves.

A one year deal? Yall on crack

If hes staying, hes signing for 3 and retiring here.

I don't think Meester comes back unless this team asks, and I believe they'll be focused on replacing him most likely in free agency, so I doubt they ask.  I'm expecting him to retire and head home.

He WANTS to stay.

The team also wants him to remain on the roster.

It comes down to what he and his agent are willing to accept contractually in a diminished role.  If he's at the point in his career where he accepts that he's not going to be the guy, and the Jags offer him a respectable contract to stick around, then he will probably stay.  Otherwise, the team will move on.

I think Gus and Dave understand the importance of having a player of his stature (national exposure) on the roster.  The media loves the guy, and on a team that doesn't have a lot of star power, it's good to have one player that you know will garner attention.  The comments Maurice has made of late about wanting to be here because the environment is great actually helps this team when trying to lure potential free agents to Jacksonville.  MJD is a fairly popular guy among other players. He has their respect.  If he's willing to stay here, that's going to help this team in more than just the on-field production he provides.  He's THE ambassador for this team right now.
Good post FBT.

I think we see Caldwell make a few "big" splashes in FA this offseason based on that idea. Guys wanna play for a coach that people get behind and the recent support from other players regarding the Mincey situation and now MJD openly wanting to come back for Gus / Dave is a very good sign to other FAs around the league that this is a well run organization.

Personally i think MJD stays 2(maybe 3) more years before retiring a Jag.
MJD could play the role he had when he got here. It wouldn't be a bad idea, either.

700-900 yards rushing

400-500 yard receiving

We could go back to a two-back rotation with a younger QB. It may even allow him to score more since he wont be so worn out.
