If Al Davis was still alive, he'd be a Raider.

not to derail the thread but instead of making one for every free agent, one guy i hope the jaguars will pony up for is brian orakpo. get the qb in the draft, add a dominant edge rusher in FA, and then that oline needs to be taken care of.

Orakpo would be a crucial signing. This class is loaded with talented pass rushers. Jared Allen, Orakpo, Justin Tuck, Michael Johnson, Michael Bennett, Greg Hardy, Shaun Phillips, Jason Hatcher, Arthur Jones, Lamarr Houston. If we could nab one or two of those guys, our pass rushing issues would be solved. We have 20 mil + to work with.

We've seen this before. I want to wait until after the League year is up and see who is actually available before I get all lathered up. Out of that list however, Greg Hardy would be a pretty great get for the team.
One major reason why I think the Bears will use the Franchise Tag on Jay Cutler,  even if it's for the purposes of trading him,  is the Bears likely don't want Cutler to sign with the Vikings.

The franchise tag for a QB is estimated to be around 16.2 million for next year. That would eliminate pretty much all cap flexibility.

Hardy is probably the top dog. He'll probably be getting a deal averaging 8-10 million per. And I doubt Carolina is ready to pony that up considering what they already have on the books for Johnson. Michael Johnson is another interesting prospect. But would be expensive as well.

I'd like him to sign with the Vikings. It lowers the chances of them taking a QB before us in the draft.

I think Minnesota and Tennessee would be two likely landing spots especially if each retains it's current regime.

The Jets would make a lot of sense too if they could fit him into their salary cap. Sanchez is done and Geno Smith has shown little to make anyone believe he is a future starter.

I personally would not touch him with a 99 and a half foot pole.

Too bad Jax didn't use a similar strategy with Monroe....several of us suggested it. Might have been able to net more than just a 4th & a 5th.

only up until the moment the player was dealt, I'd assume.
Regarding Cutler....not really a fan....but if Jax plays itself out of the Bridgewater sweepstakes, I might be willing to do a short term deal say 2 years with Cutler.

If they did sign Cutler, I'd still draft one of the other QB who Caldwell likes as a developmental project.

That certainly would be the case if this scenario became a reality.   My guess is no one would be more thrilled than Adrian Peterson,  who will be 29 years old next season.

If Jay Cutler hit the open market,  two teams in particular that I think would make him substantial offers are the Vikings and Jets.  The Vikings don't have a long term solution at QB on their roster.  After 3 straight seasons of getting losing caliber QB play with a roster that's strong in some key areas,  the Jets are likely going to try to make a bold move at the QB position.

If Cutler receives the Franchise Tag,   it wouldn't surprise me in the least if the Bears and Jets work out a trade for Cutler.   While the two teams face each other in 2014,  I don't think that would stop the Bears from trading Cutler to the Jets.    It's likely a far better alternative from the Bears perspective than trading him to the one NFC North team that needs a starting QB.

While I certainly agree with you regarding Minnesota and the NY Jets,  Tennessee is one I'm not as confident about.

If Bud Adams were still alive,  I would have made Tennessee the favorite.   The spending spree Tennessee went on this past off-season was an indication to me that Bud Adams knew he didn't have much time remaining in life.   W/o Adams in the equation,  it's realistically possible that Tennessee will continue to try to develop Jake Locker,  who displayed noticeable progress earlier this season before another injury ended his 2013 campaign.    At the very least,  Tennessee is a team worth keeping an eye on regarding their QB situation and the impact it will have on the Jaguars and the entire league.
Orakpo would be my top FA target, but again, it's December.  With their dearth of picks for the next couple years, I doubt the Skins let him walk.

It's not like they have the cap room to overpay him. I would say that's it's very unlikely he returns to Washington next season.

I was surprised how the Eugene Monroe turned out,  as when hearing that he was traded to Baltimore,   I thought that the Jaguars would receive noticeably more in return.

Chances are,  Dave Caldwell spoke to many GM's around the league and got the impression that Monroe's value wasn't close to the level that many people,  including myself,  thought.   Hence,  Caldwell decided to cash his chips in for Monroe back in early October,  instead of risking that Monroe would suffer an injury that would basically end his trade value altogether.

Yes,  once Jay Cutler was traded after receiving and signing the Franchise Tag,  he would be off the Bears salary cap books.

One way or the other,  I definitely anticipate that Dave Caldwell will draft a QB with significant upside,  in 2014.

The Skins are poised to be up against the cap. They are going to have trouble resigning him and the tag is almost out of the question.

From Caldwell's own mouth, he didn't.
