Remember when people actually believed that Gene Smith was a legitimately good GM who was turning the franchise around? *4 years later* LOL. Kassim Osgood, Aaron Kampman, Kirk Morrison, Torry Holt, Tra Thomas, Matt Turk, Chad Henne, Laurent Robinson, the list goes on, and on.

Quality draft picks too: Blaine Gabbert, Larry Hart, Austen Lane, Rod Isaac, etc.

I'm most irritated by the fact that he let Podlesh walk away, and then went ahead and signed Anger in the 3rd round when Russell Wilson was available... Even though I will admit that at the time, that I thought it was the right move with Podlesh gone, and mediocre punting by Turk.

I recall 2009 when we had a good free agent punter named Steve Weatherford in camp.  We let him go, lost Podlesh the following year, spent a season with a crazy old man for a punter, then spent a 3rd round pick on a punter.

Weatherford is still doing a heck of a job in New York. In Super Bowl XLVI he pinned the Patriots deep which led to a safety on Tom Brady which was a key play in the game.   They actually franchise tagged him in 2011.  He now has a 5 year deal.

I'd also like to point out that Osgood was a stud on special teams.  He was a hit in my book.  Morrison played his role reasonably well.  Chad Henne is our starting QB.  I am not saying he is the answer, but I am glad we had him waiting behind Gabbert.   If you want to point to a crappy pick up, what about Luke "McGowen"?

Who's Gene? I have no clue what youre talking about.

Yeah, Osgood was good on ST, but not so much on offense.

He was some crazy guy who insisted on BAP (Best Available Player).
We should totally fire that Gene dude.

BAP isn't a bad philosophy. The problem was that Gene didn't actually know who the best player was.

He had several big failings:

1. He fell in love with certain prospects, and wasted trade down opportunities and draft picks out of fear of losing them.

2. He was enamored with development guys, and the Jags ended up with lots of 'Jars on the Shelf' instead of backups who could step in and play.

3. He also failed to fill obvious positions of need in free agency, such as safety in 2010 and LB and RB in 2012.

not gonna lie, after his first draft i was really impressed, as i am with caldwell. lets hope caldwell does wayyyyy better though.

I was a big Gene guy, I still think BAP is better over Needs drafting, but like Malabar said the problem was Gene didn't evaluate the best player correctly. In hindsight I think he was more of a Need drafter then he'd admit, it was the punter in the 3rd that got me off his bandwagon. But I rode it for a while, I admit it and openly eat crow for it.

edit: That said haven't we beaten this dead horse already?

Its probably because the team had fairly decent record his first year as GM.  But the Jaguars actually got worse each year under his watch.  I never liked the idea of hiring internally after Shack Harris was run out of town.

So what made you start this thread today?

So those idiots like rockmysox can get their jollies repeatedly. It's what they live for.

I'm pretty sure that many of them are Gene's illegitimate, orphaned children.

I guess. It's like was somebody really sitting around their house this morning upset that Gene Smith let Podlesh walk in free agency two and a half years ago?

Why overpay a 4th round punter when you can draft one in the third.

I'm pretty sure this dead horse has been beaten beyond recognition.

Slow week in the forum after they locked the tanker thread lol

Apparently.

Although it seems like one poster on this board will twist any thread into a "tanker thread".
Kirk Morrison.. Wow I forgot he was actually on the team
To me Gene's biggest blunders were just trading up so frequently.

Gene wanted a balanced team, and he achieved that. We were balanced across the board, ranking in the bottom in every category.
