Strap London with a team that's won 7 games in 3 years and let's see just how die-hard their fans truly are, especially when you see crowd shots during the game where just about every team jersey is represented.

If it's no longer an event, but just a regular season game where the home team is winless, I doubt you'd see much more loyal fan support than we do here in Jacksonville currently.  In fact, considering just how bad this team has been for the past few years, we're doing a monumental job of continuing to show up even when we know the team won't.

How are English fans about supporting lower level teams?

I know it's apples and oranges re EPL/NFL but I'm curious if the loyalty factor is very strong regarding attendance issues in the UK.

And how long would it take for the novelty/event factor to wear off?

I'd love to get some insight from an English fan.

If that's the case for truth then there really are aliens at Area 51 and Elvis is still alive chilling with Tupac.

Well I could give you an insight but then in the other thread you just said I was a dumb ignorant fan so Im guessing you'd ignore my opinion anyway Smile

Even if I regularly come into work on a Monday bleary eyed, because the time zone differences means I get a very late night on Sundays.

But lets assume that you were remotely interested to hear from an Englishman, then here goes:

The English support for level lower teams is actually pretty legendary. Take Soccer. You have 4 tiers of professional football (so imagine the NFL as the top tier, then imagine there were a bunch of other cities with football teams not quite as good, they would be in the second tier and so on). Then what happens is that each year some teams go UP a tier and some are relegated DOWN a tier, so if you are that crap you dont just lose you actually go down a whole division).

And if you are a supporter for that team, if that team is your hometown, they will still get rock solid support. It will drop off a bit, but they will still get strong support no matter what tier they drop down to.

BUT the problem here is that, because its their hometown which is usually fairly small (ie not London but some obscure town or village), then they have a reason to support them through thick and thin. Im not sure a contrived London team will have that same level of support. You cant just drop a newly formed team into London based on an obscure sport (dont be offended, the NFL is still fairly obscure overe here despite the turnout) and expect fans to have undying loyalty.

There was a bit of a straw poll done on one of the NFL UK forum sites and most people that say support Green Bay would still support Green Bay over a London based team which is telling.

I still though think you would get people through the turnstiles as you would get all your american tourists and ex pats as well as people who say support Green Bay turning up to watch Green Bay play the London team etc.

So in short, the loyalty wouldnt be there, but I bet the crowds would definitely be (and thats all the bean counters probably care about).

In short though FBT is right, at the moment the stadiums are packed out due to the fact they are an event. And also I might mention that the other game played in London this year (Vikings v Pittsburgh) sold out MUCH faster than the Jags/49ers ....... incidentally most of the jerseys I saw that night were Bears/Patriots/Packer tops ........ read into that what you will.
I HATE this topic..  so yes it is inappropriate from my perspective.  I have been suffering for at least 10 years now, when I realized Del Rio was garbage.  If the Jags move to the socialist UK, I'm out as a fan.  (same goes for LA).  We are JAX fans.

I think the GReat Khan should reassure us midway through every (losing) season, and at the end of every season that it AIN'T gonna happen....EVER !!

That said...I worry about it all the time.

Personally I would be livid if the team moved ........ I actually dont know how you guys (Americans) can just bend over and take it ....... like the Oakland Raiders ... sorry I mean the LA Raiders ...... on no Sorry I mean the Oakland raiders.

Unfortunately nowadays in big business, the city name is merely part of the branding and can be interchanged as appropriate.

I would like a London based team, but I totally get that if I lived in Jacksonville (and it was the Jags that ended up moving) that you would be spitting chips. I know I would be.

The competitive disadvantage a London based team would be is ridiculous. They'd have to travel to the US 8 times a year. Then there is the competitive disadvantage for the teams going to London, and then coming back to play a game the next week. Making that adjustment to London that quick, and then the turnaround for the next week just isn't right.

A theory being put out is that if there was a London based team, it would roster things so that they play say 2 straight away games in the US (and obviously stay there between games) ....... and likewise at home they would play 2 straight home games to cut down on flight time issues.
Quote:How are we creating a situation that makes attendance a problem?
Moving the San Fran game and the Dallas game is one reason.  I pay good money for two worthless preseason games and they send the high value marquee games to London.  Sorry but after 14 years as season ticket holder , I am done.
Quote:Next year's opening home game will be the first sellout in forever at Everbank. Proof that Khan is doing the right things with the countless initiatives he is launching.

Khan and Lamping have both acknowledged the fans are doing their part and when you say the team sucks, well everybody knows that.

Roger Goodell commended Jax this weekend for our franchise , community support and the way we are going about our business in maintaining Everbank. When Darth Vader praises us that is huge!

Supply and demand - one of the strongest laws of our free market economy - one less home game will reduce stress on our local ticket sales by increasing demand - simple logic. Yes we are upsetting some of our local die hards with the loss of a game but those same die hards who even on this board vent their frustrations will be the same loyal fans that are saving this franchise and continue to attend games.
All that means crap to our season ticket holders who have supported this team through many loosing seasons.  To send regular season games to London and charge the loyal 35000 fans for two preseason games is not only unfair but insulting to the fanbase

Maybe if you guys were more like the "socialist UK" then you could fill the stadium at premium prices rather than rely on our socialist kingdom to make the most money out of a jags home game this season.

The bitter reality for sports fans in North America is once Walter O'Malley moved the Brooklyn Dodgers to Los Angeles after the 1957 baseball season,    no fan base other than the publicly owned Green Bay Packers should feel safe that their team won't be moved at some point..........if an owner feels a better opportunity becomes available.

Get the blank out of here with that garbage because it's a case of our owner not only being greedy but to expect people here in Jacksonville to pay premium prices to watch a team who went 7 and 40 over the last three years. I'm a season ticket holder but I understand people not wanting to pay high prices for crap.

Many of us paid for the London game as well.  I know what I paid for the 2013 season for 9 games including the preseason games was the same as I paid for 10 in 2012.

We all know how you feel man. This is a big picture thing, so don't take it so personal. I watched the prices rise on my 2 tickets stay the same even when 1 game was taken away, and have missed all but one game this year because I am just looking at my tickets as a sunk cost this year. If I couldn't afford it, I wouldn't do it, because it certainly isn't fun for me.

Nobody "takes" it. I'm from So Cal and my family were big Rams supporters. Not after the move though, you'd be hard pressed to find a local fan in a city many times the size of Jacksonville. Same would be true of a Jags move, next to no one would continue supporting the team. In fact many from this area wouldn't even continue supporting the NFL and return to watching college I'd bet.

So you lot are only willing to turn up to watch a winning product? London will sell out regardless for the next 3 years
Quote:A lot of the stuff here was promoting Jacksonville. They had people handing out flyers to win a holiday to Jax "Where Flordia begins". Beachballs with "visit Jacksonville and the beaches" on them etc.

Shad iis promoting not only the team but the city over here in Europe.
The country that brought us James Bond is now impressed by flyers and beachballs.  What a sad day.

I'm sorry if you though I said you were a dumb, ignorant fan. I meant to indicate that you were a dumb, ignorant poster.

You came across as an impolite jerk.

Your thoughts on English fandom are appreciated.

See? Now how hard was that?

The impression I'm getting from a distance is that there are a sizable amount of Rams and Raiders fans that are now trying to lobby for their respective team to come back to Los Angeles.

Based on what you have seen or heard in So. Cal,   do you believe the Los Angeles area will get an NFL team in the next 5 years?        If yes,  which team?

I don't exactly have my finger on the pulse as I've lived in Florida for 15 years.  From talking to people back home, a team within 5 years seems unlikely. There's still no legit stadium or even stadium site, with multiple would-be ownership groups that go for each others blood anytime the league even glances at LA.

I do think they'll get one eventually.  Although probably closer to 10 years. The team? Who knows by then.
