Quote:Yeah....thats worked out for Shack & Gene, right?....

You should apply for a front office job man... ur a friggin genius!
Quote:I can't believe you actually just said this.

Wow. Just wow.

...hey, if he wants to make a stupid comment, he deserves nothing but a flippant response.
Quote:I dont think you meant that, but I get your point.

exactly.
Caldwell is not afraid to tank

He gets value for players who arent in his future plans.

Found some valuable contributors in FA or on the waiver wire for cheap.

All the draft picks look promising so far, especially the first 4.

Got great value late in the draft in Josh Evans. While Gene would have picked a "hungry" player from a division 2 school.

Quote:It would never have come to that (and you know that) .... Its called the "franchise tag".

That is quite an assumption.
Funny how these people are spending their time on me here....c'mon man.....whats the matter?....did we run out of "positive signs" for Caldwells regime already??.... :woot:

Lol i was referring to he probably could believe you would say such a thing.

He started by rebuilding the trenches by signing moderately priced young veterans and scouring the waiver wire.

He didn't resign veteran players who he felt weren't the right players for the system.

He cut veteran players who cost too much for their productivity.

He hired the coach he thought was the right guy to lead the organization.

He drafted a Left Tackle with his first pick.

He drafted players from smaller schools who fit the scheme.

He waited a year to get his QB.

Oh wait...this isn't the "Why Gene Smith SUX" thread. Oh well, the answers are still the same.

well then you were unintentionally correct in seeing that I had a point Wink
Caldwell didn't overpay any average level free agents. I hope that trend continues.

I've always said, I have no problem when GM's pay top dollar for true elite FA talent when that rarity happens (elite talent reaching FA) , but I absolutely HATE overpaying for average like Pashos, Porter, Landry & Session. & even Poz turned out that way.

Staying on topic I like that Caldwell didn't panic knowing how bad our QB situation was this year, he stayed the course and didn't take a QB just to take one.

QB is the position you take when you find a guy you believe in, I admire the patience it took to wait this year out at QB. I also like that he's been able to find guys like Blackmon and Marks that where able to come in and start right away.

Cutting of older vets with bad contracts? Check

Letting questionable former draft picks walk(Knighton,Cox) instead of overpaying for them in FA? Check

Signing of solid Mid level FA who have ALL produced this season? Check

Trading away a player who was leaving anyways for at least something? Check

Offensive draft picks playing reasonable well? Check

Defensive draft picks pushing older veteran players for starting time and showing real potential (Evans,Mccray,Cyprien)? Check

Hired coach who appears to be able to motivate and get players buying into his specialty (defense)? Check

He pretty much acclomplished to perfection the first stage of a rebuild which is to stabilize one part of the team (defense in our case) while clearing up cap space and stockpiling picks for the upcoming draft. All while putting us in position to find a franchise QB.
He didn't take a punter in the 3rd round for one.

He also didn't take a QB he didn't believe in.

He seems to prioritize speed as a trait in players, which I believe is absolutely the correct decision in the modern NFL.

Gratz looks like a great pick.

  • He (and Khan) fired Mike Mularkey.
  • Let the injury prone Cox go rather than signing him to a big contract and seeing his production drop as it has in San Diego
  • Did not trade up at all in his first draft, when we're in desperate need of more picks.  In fact he traded down.
  • Did not reach on a Quarterback because we need one.  He has patience
  • Josh Evans is looking pretty good for a sixth rounder
  • Though he didn't get 'desired value' for the Monroe trade, he did acquire ammunition to trade up if he so desires, rather than using future picks to get picks now -- when the team is still in rebuild mode
  • "Even if he's released"
Positive signs

Patience to get the right QB and the willingness to tank to do so.

Regardless of what our fans think about this season, drafting a potential franchise QB will boost ticket sales and wipe away past memories.

Recognizing Speed is important in the NFL and his willingness to seek out playmakers from BCS schools.
I will say this, at least Calwell moves pieces and gets something in return.. In the past the Jags rejected late round picks for Leftwhich, a mid round rumor for Garrard, late round offer for Fred Taylor and a 4th for John Henderson on draft day to Philadelphia... I mean that's just stuff I remembered, I always felt like the Jags took nothing vs something.. I know they moved a few guys in the past Smith/Harris eras but Caldwell seems much more aggressive and this team could be average right now if they paid to keep a lot of different aging or average players that would have filled cap space... Caldwell has dumped or not resigned many of those c -grade or aging players

This^^^^, he had me at "even if he's released".

Not check. Marcedes not only is still here, - but Caldwell labeled him as one of the building blocks going forward upon roster review last offseason....

I'd wait until the end of the season to give him that one....lots of winnable games coming up in the 2nd half of season.
