Quote:Ok, so I might have been off on the exact -years- for some of those teams, but you missed the larger point - those teams had a pretty long success drought too.
I also disagree with Monroe being our best player. I don't even think he was our best OLT. Now, I do agree that I was disappointed in the return on the trade & that the whole situation was mismanaged. Monroe probably should have instead been shopped at the draft weekend. .
Blackmon is IMO - clearly the best player we have.
A long drought is one thing. Being THIS BAD is a completely worse level of sucking.
Blackmon may be our best player. Shorts and Joeckel are also possible. But Blackmon could just as easily be gone in a year or two due to off-field problems. Shorts has regressed, possibly because he can only reliably catch a soft Henne pass, and not Gabbert's harder throws. Joeckel is expected to be good because of his draft position and pre-draft hype, but so far he has sucked. Who knows? Monroe could very well have been the Jags best player. He outplayed the other three through the first four games, not that that was hard to do.
The return on the trade was pathetic. But there is a larger factor, this was a direct result of drafting Joeckel, so the mistake goes back to the draft.
1) Monroe at LT. Mingo (say) at DE.
2) Joeckel at LT. Late 4th and 5th round picks in 2014.
Even if Joeckel turns out to be better than Monroe, I think the Jags would be better off with option 1. And in either case Caldwell further blew it by not signing a RT like Andre Smith during free agency.

3 of the 4 teams we played are division winning level of good. Any one of them could be in the SB this season.
People ignore this.
If the Jags get smoked by the Rams on Sunday, then I'll start buying into this worst of all time possibility....until then, I still do not agree.
As for your scenarios....I think they either should have dealt Monroe at the draft, or at least shopped him longer than they did here.....theres 4 weeks until the deadline....there was time to try and find a better offer.

You gotta consistently be on the field to be our best player... Just sayin...
As for Phill Collins, his music is peppy and Iike it. He was good when he was in Genesis too. His sports articles are funny, I wouldn't call him a sports journalist. He's more of a comedy writer who focuses on sports. And I admit, I laughed at what he said about us. Some of the info was off, but some was pretty much right on.
His critique of the owners kid and his analytics of Gabbert, if true, explains alot about where this team is. Can you imagine if we didn't go shopping for a better QB option cause some kid wrote a silly statistical analysis deffending gabbert? smh

The analytics thing was downplayed pretty heavily by Bradley and Caldwell as not having as much influence as was implied by ESPN's article.
The funny part of it is that the offensive line got worse anyway and when he actually is presented with time and a pocket Gabbert still does something stupid! I wonder what's on Tony Khan's drawing board right now?

This writer dude has no life.

Don't take this so seriously. Any team can be picked apart and laughed at like this. It was all a good laugh for me. This dude probably is a Phins fan and is still upset about the '99 blowout.

Hmmm any criticism the jags get is well deserved!!

As a fellow Celtics fan...what? He was just saying how we should tank for Wiggins during this years NBA draft...

Boy, some of you guys are so sensitive.
I think Simmons is very good and whether you like it or not he's read by millions.
He's funny and smart and if you think he and other writers aren't going to take some cheap shots at a team many are starting to call one of the worst in the history of the NFL, well, wake up.
I also find it real amusing that many are complaining about misinformation and cheap shots - when so many posts on here are nothing but misinformation and cheap shots.

IIRC, in the story a bag of beans eventually lead to a Golden Goose.....

Simmons, do your job. Oh wait, he is.

LOL at Titans , what a moron .........but he got the general idea that the Jaguars blow big time right.

There's no reason to doubt Bradley and Caldwell--- LOL, but.... Wouldn't you downplay it as well?
The bolded is something I hadn't thought about, but now that you've slipped that little kernal into my brain, I don't think I'll be able to sleep very well at night for some time...

After reading this I now realize the Jaguars are not a very good football team. Thanks Bill Simmons.

I laughed a little. The only problem I have is the continued mischaracterization of Fred as fragile. Tom screwed Fred with the way he used him as a decoy that year. All of this perception is really going to hurt his hall of fame chances. What Fred did for this team and how it stacks up with the all time greats is HOF worthy. Cheap shots at him is pathetic at this point.
