I can't imagine the crying on this board had he retained all the guys he let go and then we saw the same type of start this year. Mostly by all the same ones crying now about all the new guys.

The point of this season is to see what young(er) players we can keep moving forward. We don't bury those players behind mediocre vets for the sake of winning an additional game or two in the short term. Use your roster spots to find players that can be here and be here their the prime in the long term, don't burn those spots on 30 something vets.
I don't think Caldwell was tanking to go 0-16/1-15 to get the first pick, but rather play the young guys and let whatever happens, happens with regards to the record. If we happen to go 1-15, we take the first pick; if we go 7-9, we have more young parts to build with in the future.
Well, we purged some cap space and put ourselves in the position to draft a franchise QB. We get that QB and use other draft choices and available cap space to add a center and 2 guards and this team automatically is massively upgraded. Then the year after add d line and linebacker help and we could be looking good.

It's the hickville perception. Beats me too. As if, being good 'in the is future' is guaranteed and binding. Or that a championship would be granted for having a pretty looking roster. Or that Houston, 'tennessee' and Indy, 3 emerging squads, will all decide to get worse so we surpass them.
HOW ABOUT YOU DEVELOP A CULTURE OF WINNING BY BEING THE BEST YOU CAN BE AT ALL TIMES AND LET THE CHIPS FALL AS YOU MOVE ON?
The fans of the Jaguars who hold on to this inane belief are as bewildering as our Jags. #LosingIsCultural
People do realize Gene Smith spent a small fortune on players that were COMPLETE busts (Laurent Robinson anyone??) We've got a huge amount of cap space tied up in players no longer on the roster, and the SAME thing will happen next year when Poz, Lewis, Mincey, etc. get cut? The good thing is that even with all that wasted cap space, we should still be able to START fixing some holes via free agency, in addition to drafting 1st overall.
Quote:What talent did we have? Cox who would get hurt half the year, every year? Knighton who was incredibly inconsistent? A 32 year old Daryl Smith? No thanks.
Say we went out and spent on a top class LB and G, we would still not be better than 6-10. The QB is the main problem. They know Blaine is bad, theyre trying their best to make him improve but he would hold the team back no matter what. If there was a rookie QB worth taking at 2 im sure we would have seen more enforcement's brought in.
Gratz replaced Cox. Guess which one is hurt right now?
Knighton is a clear upgrade over every single DT on this team. Can you imagine how good our line would be with Knighton and Marks playing together?
Daryll Smith, even at 32 is balling right now if you've caught any of the Ravens game this year. Geno Hayes should be a backup on someone's team.
All three guys signed for reasonable and in some cases team friendly contracts. None of them would have hindered the rebuilding process.
This offseason was one of the best when it came to FA offensive linemen. The Titans and Colts each bolstered their line while we sat on our hands and then waste a #2 overall draft choice to pick a RT. Overlooking the fact that there were at least 3 RTs capable of playing at a high level sitting in our faces in the free agency market leading up to the draft. We cut Landry for no apparent reason making a unnecessary roster hole and pretty much forcing Caldwell to fill the position via draft. We made absolutely no attempts to upgrade the Center and Guard positions and no attempts at finding a capable #2 wide receiver knowing Blackmon is suspended for the first 5 games. Unless you consider relying on a ragtag group of UDFAs an attempt.
And then we have the most important part. The QB. Caldwell pretty much hung his hat on Gabbert/Henne while other teams went out to upgrade their QB. But I know, I know. Wait until next year.
Right.
I dont know about mailing in the season... but I was saying from the beginning it was in Caldwell's best interest to go with Gabbert(which I guess you could argue is mailing in the season). GM's are tied to the QB they bring in. Doing so last offseason would only accelerate Caldwell's timeline. This year he was playing with house money and can blame Gene Smith. Im sure they thought to bring in some young players and get them experience... and if the team won a few games even better.

Right.
All this is true, but we would not be in the best position to draft #1 with all those players. DC has decided to follow the old ATL model and Colts model. Tank one season, get the best QB, and build from there.

But that's not what we did, we let Daryl Smith go for Geno Hayes, Knighton for Marks, Cox for Blackmon, these aren't young guys where evaluating for the long term.

We get it. You're mad that your Cox and Smith Jersey's aren't relevant anymore. It happens. I'm sure the Cox jersey is particularly bad given the possible innuendos that can be made with it.

Hayes and Marks are both 26, their young enough to stick around for awhile should they play well. Blackmon was a late addition and a reserve until Gratz ended up getting injured and the team wasn't willing to pay Cox the contract he received from San Diego. The one the move I didn't like was letting Knighton go considering the contract he got from Denver.

I'm not talking about if for my health, it's relative to the conversation. I get it you don't want to hear any criticism this early in the rebuild.

In fairness I think Blackmon has been a GREAT addition, and Marks has played well, I'm just arguing against the statement that we cut starters to evaluate young guys to build around.
No we cut starters because the front office evaluated them and thought they where better off without them, we'll see in the long run. But let's not sugar coat the process, it is what it is.
Caldwell knew he couldn't fix it all in one offseason. All he had to do to ensure another high draft pick was leave the QB position alone for a year.
He did add a few pieces this year that will be a part of winning Jags teams in the future.

Based on Pot Roast from last year, post eye, he wasn't worth bringing back. Denver took a chance really, and we'll see how long he keeps his weight under control.

It's possible that was the plan, but that would be a definitive yes to mailing it in this year.
KC spent big money on a HC and a QB.
We resigned Meester.

None of those guys were cut, they weren't resigned. Cut players would be under contract, free agents have a choice about where they go.
How is it possible that KC can be the worst team in the league last year, and now 4-0, and the jags looking to have the worst team in league history? Already ready for a new GM.
If I had the same production at work as Caldwell I would no longer have a job. fire Caldwell!
