Quote:Knighton played like garbage last year. He isn't better than Marks. Cox, as others have mentioned, was always getting hurt. Mathis was done. To me, releasing Darryl Smith was the only questionable call.
The secondary really is better than what we had last year, considering that our two starters last year played mostly hurt and the backups were awful. There is more depth in the secondary.
Almost every move Caldwell made was an upgrade at their respective positions over last year. But I expect even some of them to be replaced and upgraded as time goes
Gene Smith and Shack ran this team into the ground for over a decade. It won't take that long to fix this team, but it won't happen overnight, either.
What? We drafted an entire secondary and look at the yardage teams are putting up on us? I know their tired but damn the offense sucked last year and that secondary put up more resistance then this secondary.
Look I understand they're young and learning but don't tell me we "Upgraded" the secondary.
We also drafted two WR that have yet to show us anything, how did we upgrade the WR position?
Geno Hayes is not an upgrade over Daryl Smith
I just don't get it people are so ready to rubber stamp everything, you can't possibly believe almost every move Caldwell made has been an upgrade.
Quote:It wasn't questionable to release Smith because, and this is important, THEY DIDN'T!
No but we let him sit there in Free Agency until JUNE when it was well documented he WANTED to come back here. If the Jags wanted him they could've had him, Caldwell made a decision don't sugar coat it.
Did they try and re-sign Smith?

I know Caldwell mentioned that they were in contact with his agent early in free agency. I wouldn't be surprised if he was looking for a multiyear deal and/or out priced himself. The Jags moved on with Hayes and the market dried up.

Ok, the 35 year old OLB who missed the entire previous year with a serious groin injury wanted too much money to come back and so he wasn't resigned. There you go.

He signed a one year deal that kinda blows up that theory.
Quote:The "small vocal minority" MalabarJag, myself and a few others tried to tell y'all this offseason that Caldwell had no intentions on making this team better. They were being cheap. They cut or did little to resign the players we did have, created more roster holes than necessary in the process and then claimed they were trying to get younger by selling you on some late round hope or UDFA. We have some of the most cap space available in the NFL! Look what we have to show for it.
What exactly would be the point in spending a bunch of money in the first year of a rebuild? Do you not know how a rebuild works? The point is to get rid of bad contracts not make new ones.
You guys are terrible.
Quote:He signed a one year deal that kinda blows up that theory.
Except that he signed that deal after the door here was closed. He had a chance to come here and chose a different ending. Let's not act like it's all Caldwell's fault that these guys aren't here. If he'd paid them what they wanted the story would be "I can't believe he paid these terrible players all that money!!!!"

I haven't seen any reports Daryl Smith was asking for big money, nor did he sign for big money, so where is this idea that he held out for more money coming from?
As a matter of fact when he signed in Baltimore they said in the papers they had been in contact with him earlier in the offseason but waited until June because of the lack of interest in him. They didn't figure anyone else was going to snag him up so they kept their options open until the end of the offseason.

Its not about spending all your money. Its about spending smartly, not cutting what little you have and sitting on your wallet the rest of the way.
I have a friend who flips houses:
We gut and remove all of the rotten, old, outdated pieces and go to Home Depot or Lowes for the replacement parts. We pretty much demo everything from inside out and replace everything that needs to be changed with higher end products (counters, tiles, etc) which helps add even more value to the house, and as a practical matter we leave the things that DO NOT have to be replaced. The longer the house sits unfinished, the more money we loose.
On the other hand:
Caldwell has gutted and removed all of the old, rotten, outdated pieces too. Caldwell does his a bit differently though and pretty much leaves only the walls and roof of the house. But instead of replacing what he got rid of with higher end products he went to the Dollar Store and did a patchwork job. A year later he may eventually go to Home Depot or Lowes to complete the job, assuming his wife (Khan) gives him back the checkbook.
Quote:yes, McDonalds would fire me if I burnt down the building the first week I was there!
If I recall correctly the masses on these boards and elsewhere were calling for them to burn the whole thing down. Well you got your wish now shut up and be patient while a new house is being rebuilt.

Not saying this is or isn't true, but you mind linking one of the well documented reports that he was quoted as saying he wanted to stay? I don't recall that.
I personally think it was a mutual decision. The Jags are in roster evaluation and rebuild 2-3 down the road mode, Daryl Smith didn't fit that. Daryl is nearing the end of his career and I'm sure he wanted to play for a contender to finish out his stellar career, and the Jags didn't fit that.
Why can't we just be happy that Daryl is playing well and getting the national attention he deserves? I'm happy for Daryl, and I'm happy that Geno Hayes (and hopefully Laroy Reynolds) are getting the experience and evaluation needed to determine if they are fixtures for the future.
Quote:I'm not talking about if for my health, it's relative to the conversation. I get it you don't want to hear any criticism this early in the rebuild.
Criticism is fine, but the players we lost aren't really part of the problem. Add Cox, Smith, and Pot Roast to the team, and we're still 0-4. We probably lose pretty much just as badly as we did. Our Offense isn't doing our Defense any favors. Now if you find that he released an Offensive Guard who was starter caliber, do let me know so I can go in a corner and scream.

Caldwell's clock doesn't start ticking until he gets his franchise QB. If you don't understand this still, you are hopeless.

He went to the Dollar Store to do a patchwork job because he
had to have those pieces immediately. The planning committee (The NFL) requires him to have those parts immediately. Not having those parts means that the house will be condemned. Unfortunately Home Depot and Lowes did not have the parts he needed in stock. So he went to the Dollar Store to get what he can, and replace those other parts at a later time. Also Caldwell had to gut the house the way he did because it was falling apart. A few walls were structurally sound -- but for the most part it was dilapidated beyond repair.

I remember seeing it on twitter from Mark Long I think and it was in the Baltimore sun one of the reasons he was signed so late was because Jacksonville was still talking to him until the final couple of weeks before he signed with Baltimore. I don't have the links but maybe a google search would show something up? I don't know I remember reading about it.
Any doubts now?
We've mailed in this season.
Not to mention the lies fed to us in the off season....
Tony Khan:
"Two top tier tackles are the new thing, we are getting ahead of the curb"
Trades Monroe.
Lies.
We wasted a top 2 pick to replace an already great LT because we are CHEAP. Now we head into the draft with a gaping hole at RT JUST LIKE LAST YEAR.
