I do know this about ILB's, they need big bodies up front to be effective. The great Ray Lewis pushed for Ngata to get drafted because he knew he needed that big man up front to do his thing. Poz is a good MLB but he has zero dominant big men in front of him. When there is no other threat on defense it is really easy to scheme the one good player out of the game. He's playing to his contract and is the best player on our defense. Great players can exist on teams that suck and our team sucks tremendously.
If anyone needs to get cut its the whole qb lineup, Marcedes, and Meester mainly do to age.
Quote:You should care because you could cut him next year, eat his remaining signing bonus, sign another middle linebacker of A.J. Hawk or Brian Cushing level for half the price of Poz, and then sign another player of the Sean Smith level for 5 million per year the following year. I would rather have Brian Cushing and Sean Smith for the same price as Paul Posluszny. According to spotrac, Poz is currently the 3rd highest paid inside linebacker and he's been average at best so far this season.
you are dreaming if you think HOU let's Cushing walk
AJ Hawk? he is basically Poz lite
Sean Smith? didnt he sign with the chiefs already? that ship has sailed.
if these guys are as cheap as you think, then we could keep Poz and sign 5 of those guys.
I like Poz. He's got that blue collar work ethic you can't help but respect, never draws attention to himself in the locker room, and plays hard on every snap. I hope we can find a way to keep him.

I said players like those mentioned. Hawk signed his deal the same year Poz signed his. Cushing and Smith both signed deals this past offseason. Cushing was a little far fetched, because he'll be averaging 7 or 8 million per year in his 3rd year. Its more or less a similar deal to Poz'. You could walk with young players like Bradley, Jordan, Spikes, or Angerer for less than 4 million per year next season or you could go with veterans like Vilma, Williams, Dansby, Smith, or even Fletcher for probably cheaper. All of the above players can play at a similar level to Poz' current play and for half the price.
I don't get the man crush on Poz. He was above average when he first got here and his play is slipping to that of an average MLB at best. He's a sure tackler, but he gets bullied around and now he is missing fits this season.

gets bullied around? uh no
you don't get the crush? maybe its because he plays well for our team. he plays with max intensity and never takes a play off.
ya, cant wait til he gets cut so we can replace him brandon spikes... ugh

Point? What's wrong with Burfict?

He's not very good. Certainly not 94 ranks higher than Lee and Laurinitis. Maybe you'd prefer him to them though.
Just rewatched every defensive snap from the 1st half vs the Seahawks, and shockingly Posluszny wasn't the beast on the field a few here want to believe.

1.3 - Pass went to a different part of the field.
2.1 - Gets caught inside on swing pass.
2.2 - Pass went to a different part of the field.
2.3 - Hayes blown out of his fit for a long gain.
2.4 - Bites on playaction and Willson comes open.
2.5 - Blocked by a TE and driven back a few yards, but able to make a tackle for a gain of 4 or 5 yards.
2.6 - Driven way out of the play by #40 who is a RB convert to FB. Run down to goal line.
2.7 - Bites on playaction and TD pass.
3.1 - Another playaction pass.
3.2 - Bites on misdirection and then driven out of the play by #60.
3.3 - Pass to different part of the field.
3.4 - Hayes and Poz end up playing the same zone and both cover the RB, while the pass is completed behind them.
3.5 - Sack
4.1 - Bites on the end around.
4.2 - Blocked out of his fit.
4.3 - Run goes to a different gap.

7.2 - Pass to different part of the field.
7.3 - Man coverage on Sydney Rice. Complete and chased out of bounds for a gain of 24.

Smith was a better linebacker. Poz is a tackle machine and little else. Very weak in coverage.

this whole thing proves nothing because its obvious you didnt watch the game objectively. you already decided that he wasnt good before watching the game.
nobody said he is a perfect player.

Smith wasnt exactly a shutdown coverage guy himself

This is a very good point.
You need the DT's to draw double teams and free up the lb's to make plays. If we still had stoud/henderson he would look like an all pro.
There are a few exceptions like Ray Lewis and Dick Butkus (although butkiu never played in a playoff game). Poz is exactly the type of player he was when we signed him. He is a decent athelete but really solid tackler. I'm giving him a mulligan this year because this defensive line is awful. Yes he is poor in the passing game but he's a MLB. Most MLB suck in pass coverage.(He had a pick last game)
LB is a devalued position in a pass-first league. There's no reason to allocate a lot of money to a mediocre MLB.

Very weak in MAN coverage just because he's slow. He's far from horrible in zone coverage. Not fantastic, but not "very weak".
Quote:Disagree. Marcedes Lewis by FAR is the most overpaid/ overrated player on the team.
...and Caldwell decided that he was worthy of being one of the building blocks going forward. Scary. Better just be a blip on Caldwells decision making.
Those nuckleheads calling Marcedes/Greg Jones a beast

Did you watch Navarro Bowman absolutely terrorize the Rams last night? In coverage, run-fits, and rushing the passer, that's the kind of impact I expect a $40M linebacker to make, on a consistent basis. This was without
his fellow all-pro running mates Patrick Willis and Aldon Smith. I'm not trying to discredit Poz's ability to be a solid option at MLB, but he's not a special player and is certainly not worth what the Jaguars are paying him. One can make the argument that he's one of the more overpaid players in all of football, and when you're overpaying a non-premium position, it's only a matter a time before an organization finds a more effective cheaper option, your assertion that it'd be difficult to replace a player like Paul Posluszny is ridiculous.

He is not a good player, period and never has been for the Jaguars. His INT was a nice play but no one can convince me that he's in the top 25 LBs in the NFL. All he does is make tackles trailing from behind, 5 yards down the field.
