It's way too early to write-off Smoot. He will end up being a valuable swing guy on the defensive line who will average 6-8 sacks per year. He was known for his leadership and never getting hurt. That being said, the Jaguars needed to take another offensive lineman in the 3rd or 4th rounds. There were several guys available who likely would have upgraded our very weak line. Feeney, Dawkins, Asiata, or Elflein would have become starters- if not immediaely, then shortly into the season. I believe Asiata was available in the 5th round and his strength is run-blocking- just what they needed with the addition of Fournette.
I wouldn't expect too much from a 3rd round strong side DE prospect in year one.
(Ngakoue is an outlier and plays the weak side)
His role for now is to back-up Campbell. While he's no spring chicken, Campbell appears to be in shape to play the vast majority of the snaps at big end as well as some pass-rushing downs at DT.
Hopefully by the time preseason games begin, Smoot will be showing that he can at least fill in w/o being a major liability.
It may be a year or two before he looks like much more than that.

The site is moving so quickly I think I missed this one.
Can you find out where they're talking about him, and either link it or direct me to it.

The video is black for some reason. Maybe I can try again later, although I did watch this and even broke down much of what I saw. I just don't recall Smoot in it, or them talking about Smoot. Who did he go up against, and what happened? Was it just the one snap?
He went against Gennesy and got swallowed up. Lags and Boselli both said "not good." "No suddenness."
Just the one snap.
I'll wait to see him in preseason action to pass any meaningful judgement.

He's like the unknown name on the roster right now.
Personally, I don't expect much at all. Announcers at the Senior Bowl pointed out that he didn't do much all week and he wasn't even the best pass rusher on his own Illini team. In my opinion he was the worst selection we made. We could've had Dan Feeney for God's sake! We're so deep at DE right now, I wouldn't even be surprised if he didn't make the team.
...Based on your posts... I'm positive you are Dan Feeney's girlfriend, mom, or something of that ilk lol

I had the same high opinion of Forest Lamp and Ryan Ramczyk. I'm a big believer that you need a strong O-Line in order to have a decent passing and running game. I hate it when teams seem to ignore the O-Line, like it is an afterthought. I believe that LT is the single most important position on the entire football team other than QB and you better have a solid LT before installing a franchise QB. Looking at what we currently have on the O-Line, it seems to me like the GM and coaching staff largely ignoring the obvious deficiencies.

Well....the o-line matters.

Oh yeah... I remember that one and even thought, "Wow... way to go Gennesy." I didn't know that was Smoot tho.
Still, it's one play. I doubt his roster spot is in any jeapardy. Look how long they kept Andre Branch around. Smoot has to be better than Branch.
Regarding those saying we should have gone OL instead of Westbrook or Smoot, it's a good thing we didn't draft Nico Siragusa. Dude blew out his knee and is done for the year. The Ravens locker room must look like an ER ward.
Not only was it one play, it was his first play ever in the NFL in pads. I think it's a little premature to judge him at this point.

He hasn't really flashed at all in anything that I have seen. Looks like just another guy out there so far. But you're right.. way too early to lay judgement on him. Who knows? He could be the next Austen Lane (hoping for better, of course).
Until the sarcasm font is patented, these types of miscommunications are going to continue..
As much as not stocking up at online in the draft was a mistake, not even taking a swing at one of the top free agent guards available is laughable. I really wish they would have just thrown numbers at the o-line this off-season.

I don't see him as an Alualu type at all. Aluala was much bigger and was a former DT. Smoot is like 6'3" 264 lbs. which is pretty average for a DE. Personally, I like UDFA Hunter Dimick a lot more than Smoot.
... other than the 40 pound weight difference and the fact they play different positions, they are merely identical ...

It's a good thing we didn't get Lamp. He just blew out his ACL and is done for the year.
You don't know he would have blown out his knee here. Maybe it was the type of drill he was doing, maybe it was a particular hit he took in practice. Nobody knows. Maybe he would have gotten injured if we took him, but maybe he wouldn't.

Maybe during pre draft scouting they found he had soft knees.
Either way... back to banging the drum for Feeney, who was also selected by the bolts.
Feeney had concussion issues in 2016, so... maybe they were worried about that. Since ya know... OL guys bang their heads the most often.
SOURCES TELL US "If he's a zone-only guard then what is his value? You can find those types of guards in the later rounds and not spend as much money on them. If you think he's more than just a zone guard then he goes on the second day (Rounds 2-3). I wouldn't take him until the third day personally." -- AFC scouting director

Too bad for Lamp. However, maybe this is a sign that luck is turning the Jaguars' way. After all the bad luck (and bad decisions) made during the past 10 years or so, it's time for things to turn around. Let's hope Albert retiring was the bottom and now the team will be on on a long upwards cycle. By the way, we may even look at his sudden departure as a long-term plus if it enables them to re-sign Telvin Smith.
1. Cam starts out pretty solid and eventually becomes a pro-bowl left tackle.
2. Fournette is the real deal and puts together several 1,200 + yard seasons in addition to becoming a threat catching passes.
3. Fowler becomes the player the team thought they drafted 3 years ago.
4. Bortles limits his mistakes and does enough to not cause the team to lose games. Sorry, that's the best I can expect from him.
If these things happen, there is no reason why this team cannot become a winner again starting this season. The defense is just too talented and young (other than Poz) to expect otherwise.
For those skeptics (I can't blame them considering our futile record the past 10 years), let's not forget this is still a very young team that was the most successful new franchise ever by making it to 2 championship games in it's first 5 seasons. Yes, it's been a long time but I expect the loyal fans to be rewarded for hanging in there beginning this season.
