There's no point in grading Caldwell yet. He's has the most elite picks and spent by far the most FA money in history. He's been playing the game on rookie mode.

He has been playing checkers while the rest of the league plays chess. He was the rich white kid who was handed a million dollars by his dad and bought a 500k Ferrari and another 500k worth of fidget spinners.

Next year he gets to join the adult table, and we'll see how it fares. He doesn't simply get to point to the cream of the crop at FA and say "However much anyone else offers, we'll top it." He actually has to start earning his keep.

Considering how often he has missed while playing with the deck stacked in his favor, I am not optimistic. But I am hopeful.

That's a shallow way of looking at it. I mean hell, most of Caldwell's best value picks came late in the draft. If anything picking later in the first round is going to be better for Caldwell as he won't feel as much pressure to pick the boom or bust top 5 kinda guys. We're a winning football team with arguably the best defense in the NFL, players are more willing to hop on the bandwagon at this point, I don't see how things get HARDER for Caldwell. You can make an argument that cap management is going to be an issue moving forward, as it is with any team with a talented roster, but he's proven that's actually a strong area for him so far. Lets face it, people hate on Caldwell because he missed on a couple first round picks. I'm not going to say whether that's fair or not, but there's a lot of pressure to draft a superstar with a top 5 pick and him picking later in the first round alleviates that issues greatly and plays into his hand.
He's made two good "late in the draft" picks, and they both came in the same draft. The other 3 draft have zero good late round picks. Obviously we aren't judging this one yet, in either direction.

But.... How can ya ignore all the 2nd-5th rounders who have exceeded all expectations?

After the 1st round: Yannick, Colvin, Linder, Telvin, ARob, Hurns, Dede (I think he's going to be good), Cam Robinson, Jack.....

He will always be tied to Bortles though.

All but two of those were day 2 picks, definitely not "late in the draft" when you're talking still quite valuable double digit selections. Telvin and Colvin were his two legitimate late round finds. Dede we'll see.

Not sure you will find many GMs who are successful based on your criteria for late round picks. Very few end up starting. Most of the picks in the range you are looking at end up as depth/ special teams.

Do you count someone like Hurns or Abry Jones as good finds? I realize they weren’t “drafted”, but him and his team evaluated the players.

Yes but your argument was it’s been easy for him because he’s been picking in the top 5. His best picks have come in the middle/late rounds and a handful of them he has specifically traded into position for.

You were talking about top 5 picks and all the money in the world.. Now it's 2nd and 3rd round picks that also don't count? So basically you're saying that he has to hit on every 6th-7th round pick, or none of his picks mean anything in your eyes huh?

Keep spinning.

That's not what I said at all. I said they weren't late in the draft, and those weren't even my words they were someone else's which was made abundantly clear. Once again you either really struggle at reading comprehension, or you're mischaracterizing on purpose which is even worse. Either way there's no point in trying to have a back and forth with someone like that.
Bump.

His QB and his defense are going to the playoffs. Credit the man!

Yes.

If you find yourself being one of the people starting to cautiously believe in Blake Bortles -  but still you're trying to rationalize your calling for Caldwell's head  - you might need to start re-thinking your stance.

Caldwell has done a helluva job stacking this roster and it's all clicking at a good time.
Heck of a job and looking forward to a pattern of sustainable success.
Have to give credit to Caldwell, and Tom as well for changing the culture

The team of Tom and Dave is unmatched
The culture of the team didn't change until TC got here. Caldwell will always be guilty of keeping Bradley around too long.
Really the whole front office has done a great job and yes this includes DC. Also, John Idzik(think that's his name, former Jets GM) has done a great job with our cap space

And this is a perfect example of how desperate some people are in trying to find any little knock on Caldwell, while trying their hardest to ignore the huge amount of good he has done for this team.
After keeping Gus, the bad picks and failed FA acquisitions, if there was any way to redeem himself, this was it.

Whoever had the idea to reach out to Tom and offer him a position in the organization and believe that Marrone was the right guy to be able to coach this team up and prepare them in the off-season, is the brains behind all this success

Could someone tell me what our record would be this year without Ramsey, Jack, Smith, Linder, Bortles, Hurns, Lee, Ngakoue, Fowler, Jackson, Gipson, Colvin-all Caldwell picks/signings?

Missing on Gus or keeping him too long does not negate his good picks.

I can't see how anyone could say, either expressly or tacitly, the above list of players does not represent the nucleus of this currently 10-4 and playoff team.

Yep. Caldwell haters in desperation mode.
