I do not give him the lion's share of the blame for this loss, but he has considerable culpability.

I saw a post on the Jets board before the game saying Kirk Cousins would be perfect for this team.  I am inclined to agree, even though Cousins would be hurt with the lack of a # 1 WR.

Really?

Cousins has never had a true #1 and still doesn't have one. He spreads the ball around to everyone. Cousins would be so money for this team.
Hey all.

So barring the score, I actually really enjoyed the game yesterday. Just as a whole we seem to be more of a football team than we have in years.

Now Bortles killed us yesterday. It's not all on him but like 90% is. You have to be able to pass if your a QB. That's the first, most basic need. And he can't, he can make the high percentage, short yard throw or a damn slant but that's it. As soon as he makes his first mistake, everything starts to wobble and if he makes more mistakes then its all downhill. Here's my main worry, would you pick Bortles as your QB for your last, got to get 7 drive?  I feel sorry for the WR's as it's almost irrelevant if they run a good rout or not as the pass will be all over the place and they'll have to pull off a crazy move to try and catch it. I feel sorry for Hackett as his playcalling almost becomes irrelevant and his list of plays drop dramatically.

Now Lee deserves the other blame. I see the let's get rid of Hurns as Lee is so much better rabble have gone quiet. Too many drops, too many mental mistakes on punt returns. This is his window, he's a starting WR, he needs to start playing like one.

D made some silly errors giving up those long runs, really struggled with the cut back runs but the did bring us back in the game with the fumble TD and INT. The O wasn't going to get us those 10 points. The D is the reason we are 2-2 and yes we need them to keep teams to under 17 points for this O to stand a chance but I can't fault them for giving up plays and our O failing to keep up.

Got to add, great great performance by Nortman. Not often do punters get praised but he kept giving us chanded to win the game.

He might not have a Julio/OBJ/Brown/Green/etc type of WR1, but let's be real Crowder, Pryor, Doctson, and Jordan Reed absolutely demolish what we have especially sans Arob.

I never said he doesn't have weapons. He does.

But he doesn't have a #1 WR. Crowder is a slot guy. Pryor has been a huge bust and Reed is always hurt. He's doing work with old man Vernon Davis. Cousins is exactly the type of QB this team needs.
We had so many chances to win that game, late in the 4th quarter and in overtime, and time and again, victory slipped from our grasp.

That's about it.

So we're 2-2. 12 games to go.

We need more talent on offense. That's the glaring weakness that I see. We have one good running back, and maybe two good offensive linemen.
@Steelers might be a hard road game coming up but after that?

Rams, Colts, Bengals, Chargers, Browns, Cards, Colts again.

7 very winnable games in a row. If the Jags can be 6-6 after that Colts game, anything is possible. It's definitely going to be a roller coaster season for sure but it's absolutely better than what we have had the past 10 seasons.
All of these finer points of the game are good and dandy...
but the real main point of today is: If Bortles plays better and is more accurate we're not in OT.
He was off target and looked bad most of the day.

The long runs are bad on the D (even though one should have never been)
and the dropped pass and key penalties were killer toward the end of the game...

But it all circles back round to Bortles.
Everyone was ready to serve up some crow remember? Mr Hyde came back just in time..... He was 50% and under for completions like the whole game.
He had yet another pass batted turned INT...
Sure everyone deserves some blame for a loss but Bortles is the number 1 reason we're dealing with stacked boxes, the number 1 reason the play calling is tailored to play soft. He's the reason we had to have the defense make critical plays late just to have a chance in OT.
It's unfortunate but he'll play just well enough this season for us to win 7-8 games, while countering every good game with a bad.

What are the defense stats?  Do you blame the QB for that?

The defense is the only reason the Jags were in the game. The offense had literally only one drive that amounted to anything and that was the very first one. When it came to crunch time the defense came away with a fumble recovery for a TD by Jack and then an int by Bouye to set the offense up on the 30.

lol......Kirk Cousins would NEVER come to Jacksonville. Good free agent QBs hardly ever go to small markets.

I got the feeling the defense was overconfident after the first drive, that first TD should never happen. I don't know why we weren't committed on stopping the run as we should have.
I think that on the Mcguire TD run (which was on a 1 & 10) we were in nickel as I saw Colvin on the field, wonder why.
...

Looked like the jets were in "11" personnel.
3WR, 1TE, 1RB

Passes are getting batted, so deliver it lower and less accurate.  Way to use your head, Blake.

Though the broadcasters comments feel like just general speculation to me, no matter the reason he's doing it, it needs to be addressed.

I really don't fault coaching here.  Multiple times there were open receivers that Bortles just missed, or the WR dropped, or somebody held on a good play when it wasn't necessary.

The penalty at the end of the game was garbage as well.  Poz doesn't get to talk when a guy hits him in the back out of bounds?  Where was the flag on that one?

This team is far better than in years past.  I'm optimistic for its direction.  I hope we sign Cousins and draft a QB high and spend the rest of the draft on linemen and receivers.  If we do, we're set for the foreseeable future.

We may still win the division this year.  This was a motivated Jets team, at home, after a London flight.  It's disappointing, but despite all the gaffes, we have multiple chances to win.
If a team elects to play the Sunday after the London game, it absolutely should be at home, not on the road.

You don't blame the worst called OC game I've ever seen? Blake's strengths are outside of the pocket where he can't get passes batted down. Why wasn't Blake rolling out all game? Instead of 1-2 yard runs on 1st and 2nd downs and creating a 3rd and long every time.

The OC was atrocious.

Thanks! Haven't had the time to watch the game again and I only remember spotting Colvin in which was unusual since it's usually Poz in on 1 & 10. Thanks for taking note of the offense personnel on the play. Smile

I'm sorry--we're supposed to not call NFL pass plays that are routine and every starting QB can make now?  It isn't Hackett's fault Blake overthrows every wide open deep ball.
I'm just glad we're .500. That's still improvement over the Pus Badley days.

How many times in the last 4 years have we been talking about a loss that we truly should've won and weren't completely outclassed on the field? I don't remember a single game except maybe the Ravens last year when Myers got blocked that we should've won and didn't.

Better days are already here, even better days are ahead for us with a few more personnel moves.
