Yup.  You'll get one heck of a smoke trail, an extremely hot and angry motor, and milky oil.  I've seen it a couple of times, both incidents had a familiar FOMOCO feel to them.  Won't be driving down that path any longer.
I still think something broke.
If you can locate where the oil is actually coming from we could probably help more.


Hopefully you didn't throw a rod or something.
Ok after further review....


A rocker arm broke out of the actual housing or slot....and blew a hole threw the dang valve cover.


Also coolant blew all over the motor.


Man I'm screwed. Help guys.


Listening to all advice.


Do I replace the engine or tear the joker down and replace the heads (bottom end).

Well you have two problems.


What damage did the thrown rocket arm do?


And what caused it to be thrown?


You could have extremely worn cam lobes or a bent rod.


Also since you said you recently had the oil changed, extremely low oil or a bad filter could cause "dry starting" in your valve gear since that's the last thing the oil reaches.
First thing is to ascertain the extent of the damage.  You may get lucky and get out of it with not much more than a valve job.  From a visual inspection can you see any damage to the camshaft on that bank or the cylinder head?  Pull the head off and check the pistons for damage caused by a valve.

A rocker broke and and ended up breaking another rocker and I have metal in the valves.


Then it blew right threw the valve cover causing oil to blow everywhere.


I haven't determined what caused it to break like that.


My guess is I didn't realize I had a radiator leak (very small).....that would turn into a large leak...which caused it to run hot and cause all these problems.


I'm gonna try to pull more wrenches this weekend and get more info for you guys.

This is what I am hoping for. I only pulled the valve cover off of one side, I'm hoping the other side isn't about to go.
The heads will have to come off to be resurfaced. If the heads were heated to the point of self-destruction, then they're most likely warped. I wouldn't trust them otherwise.

What's you oil level now and (assuming it's significantly low) was the oil lost when the valve cover broke, sufficient to make up this shortage?  In other words, did the oil level appear to be low before the failure?  If the answer is no and your coolant level is OK, then it's very unlikely that the engine overheated.  That means your cylinder heads shouldn't be warped or cracked, though they could still be damaged by a valve.

Any tiny metal piece in the oil? (Do you know what grindings look like?)

Can you move the broken arm valves freely by hand?  If it sucked down a valve . that's bad news.  Pull the sparkplug out of the cylinder the broken rocker arm services and take look inside.  Depending on the position of the piston, you might have a view of the surface, which can tell you a lot.

The oil level is still perfect. In the "safe area"


I'll try to post pics.

Honestly, if it was me...  time to get a new truck.  A 2008 Dodge with 140k on it says it all.

I would but I just bought it 2 years ago and I still owe 6 or 7k on it. It's a 4x4 and it's the color I want and type I want. So I don't wanna go buy another black dodge ram. My payments are super cheap. My insurance is decent.

It has a damaged head.

If the casting isn't damaged, you can have it rebuilt. I don't know if that would be cheaper than buying another. You'd have to price around, naturally. 

 

If one head has gone bad it's possible the other might. Plus, with that many miles on the motor, one bank would be outperforming the other with just one head replaced/rebuilt.

After me and my brothers looked it over...we're going with a new motor guys.


Sucks bc it's $2300 I didn't make any room for.

That sucks, man. It really does. Are you buying a crate motor or rebuild? A scrap yard like Rusty Acres has salvaged motors that came out of wrecked vehicles that were low-mileage. However, they're Ford focused. You might be able to find something similar for Dodge that won't cost as much.
