However it's not surprising that someone who refuses to realize Blake was actually not good last year based on all of his rate stats would also not realize that this defense has been quite good based on rate stats.

A team's offense and defense don't play separately in their own little vacuums.  One side of the ball can and does affect the performance and stats of the other.  This does not excuse deficiencies on defense like the lack of turnovers we've seen, but it does excuse them in situations where our offense turns the ball over on our own side of the field which leads to easy points for the other team.  We seem to do that more than any other team.  I haven't checked the numbers this year, but we did turn the ball over inside our own 40 more than any other team last year when I created a thread about it.

our defense is about 20th in the league...you can't blame the offense.  If our defense was good we'd get more 3 and outs and wouldn't be shredded by every decent QB in the league.  D-line gets no pressure, except for the rookie, the rest are lazy and week compared to the o-lines we've faced.

Quote:#4 in yards per play given up coming into this week. Looks like the money was well spent that's impressive.
We're 27th in points against. Who cares if the per play is low if they can still take the ball down the field 5 yards at a time without being stopped.

oh no it takes them more plays to score cause they can dink and dunk us to death.
And some people still want to keep Dave around?

BOTH Dave AND Gus need to go.  This is embarrassing.

Because it's not as much that as it is that we hold them hold them hold them for 2-3 quarters and then we wear down because our team is 30th in time of possession and they are often put in bad situations.
Ok but us being 30th in time of possession proves my point. If we were 15th or so in scoring then the low per play argument has weight, but there not throwing deep on us because they can take 4 to 6 yards at a time and still score thus keeping the ball away from us which is why we are 30th in TOP.

It's what the Patriots have done for years to teams. If you just going to give them the short game they will take it all day and crush you in TOP.

I think it's because we have the 4th most 3 and outs in the league.

Our 3 and out don't change that per play doesn't matter if your 27th in scoring.

Let's say they throw the ball 10 yards first down our per play is 10 yard avg, now same situation but this time they run the ball 4 yards, pass for 4, then run for 2 your avg per play is 3.33 yards but they still get the first down so who cares if it's low.

That what teams are doing to us which is why were 27th in scoring and a garbage defense. Our 3 and outs don't help but out crap defense doesnt help.
I just think overall the team is playin bad.

A real DC like Jim Schwartz would have laughed at Gus and his horse [BLEEP] strategies and personnel decisions. Gus wanted to bring in a yes man, so he hired another one of his buddies to ru his scheme.

Seems to be a theme in this organization.

The chargers game made this apparent.  Rivers and John Pagano exploited every soft spot in Wash's defense and encountered very little resistance in the form of adjustments by Wash.

I wanted to like Wash, but he seems in over his head.

NH3...

No. It's terrible. Last in penalties and 26th in PPG allowed at 28.0. Jacksonville’s defense allowed 46.3 percent conversion last year. It’s 46.7 percent this year.

<p style="color:rgb(40,40,40);font-family:helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">The entire problem is Gus Bradley and the defense. You don't spend 7 draft picks and $150 million on free agents and get WORSE in defense or stay the SAME at 28 ppg allowed.

<p style="color:rgb(40,40,40);font-family:helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">

<p style="color:rgb(40,40,40);font-family:helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">When the Jags drafted Bortles, A Rob, got Hurns, and Julius, they IMPROVED on offense.

<p style="color:rgb(40,40,40);font-family:helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">

<p style="color:rgb(40,40,40);font-family:helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">The defense and head coach NEVER improved.

The offense has improved in PPG since the Gabbert days.

The defense has NOT improved in PPG since the Gabbert days. It's actually gotten WORSE from 25 ppg allowed to 28 ppg allowed.

It's not really rocket science. Well spent 7 draft picks and $150 million.....

ALL COACHING.

Whoever the new coach is has to be salivating at the talent the D has.

The offense certainly hasn't helped them out in anyway but I at least expected marginal improvement the first half of the season. But we have Gus so I shouldn't have expected anything.

Rate stats are far better indicators than overall stats, for obvious reasons. Unfortunately they hurt Bortles' image and help the defense's image, so I can see why you refuse to acknowledge them.

The stats have to be looked at cumulatively. PPG,yards, YPP, TOP. You've got high PPG,but lowish yards, low YPP and bad TOP. What does this mean? This is an underneath defense so they are going to force teams to nibble down the field. This means extended but fewer drives. Yards and YPP tells us it's been a challenge for teams to move the ball. PPG and TOP say no something is out of whack. You could look at lack of turnovers, but you also have to look at it offensively. What is the number of 3 and outs? How many turnovers have we surrendered? What is the offense TOP?
