I was going to bring this up as well. Blake is very young and has a lot of money now and well, we all know he's partying. Does he have a drinking problem though? We don't know that. When I was his age I went out every night and got sloshed, it wasn't a drinking problem, it was a young, partying problem.
Quote:No.  I guess why I felt it was more comparable to Blackmon because it was unknown (to us).  Johnny Football was/is brash about it.  I think many who read this thread who don't live here or don't go or know people at the beach would be surprised by this thread.  Johnny was also linked to cocaine and shrooms from the house party in LA.  The information I got was related specifically to alcohol.  Nothing else.

Blackmon's drinking issues weren't unknown to us when we drafted him.  He had a DUI history coming out of college.  We trusted that when he said the drinking wasn't a problem, he meant it.

Back to the stories, I think most of us have heard things about Blake's extracurricular activities.  I have a good friend whose daughter is part of the ROAR.  She hears all sorts of stories from her daughter that are indicative of a 24 year old single millionaire looking for a good time.  Apparently, he's had a "special" relationship with at least one cheerleader, and has had his friends text another one who is engaged to see if she wanted to hook up for a late night booty call.

He's a 24 year old kid with no wife and extensive resources.  He's not a saint by any means.  Partying is something that wasn't an issue back in the day when guys like Kevin Hardy, Tony Brackens, or a host of other Jag players would host epic parties that became a thing of legends.  I don't have a problem with the guys occasionally partying to blow off steam.  What I hear quite a bit about Bortles is that he's a fixture at a few bars out at the beach, and was actually closing down a bar on Saturday night before the Raiders game.

Apparently he decided on Sunday night not to indulge because he was the first player in the stadium yesterday morning before 7:00 AM when the players weren't expected to report until 11.

This doesn't surprise me in the least bit.  As I said earlier, my son worked at an establishment that Josh Scobee used to frequent, and he described him as drinking quite a bit a day (night) before a game.  I've heard other stories of other players doing similar things.

People often forget that playing football at the professional level is a JOB.  There are many people that will go out and party the night before having to go to work the following day.

Tim,  the thing you mentioned that would concern me the most from the vantage point of you and countless others on this Forum that are passionate Jaguars fans is Blake Bortles going out late at night prior to a 1:00pm game the next morning.   After team meetings on Saturday Night,  the only place players should be is in the hotel they stay in prior to the game the next day.    I'm assuming that the Jaguars would stay closer to the stadium than the beach area.   If that's the case and that Bortles was actually around the beach,   that would be an even greater concern.

That's a concern. It would be one thing if he was playing like Tom Brady or at least a somewhat serviceable quarterback like Trevor Siemian or Andy Dalton to an extent this year. But to be out partying a day before the game is just a sure fire sign that he's not mentally mature enough and committed to football at the moment. Now it makes you wonder with all of the stories exactly what the hell he's been doing out west in California during the off-season. Your last bit is great. I just hope he's trying to take things more seriously. Not good though.

I don't know if the Jaguars stay at a hotel on the night before a game like they did during the Tom Coughlin era.

Another question that comes to mind is how many players actually drive after going out drinking above the legal limit?    Can you imagine what the ramifications would be for an NFL Franchise if a player the night before a game is legally drunk and gets into an accident that injuries or even worse kills one or more people?    It would be horrible if it happened at anytime.   But the night before a game,  it could set back an NFL team for a LONG time.

Agreed.  It is just a job, and some of those who are most bothered by this probably indulge after work even on a work night.

For some reason, they seem to take the behavior of pro athletes more personally than they do their own.

If they don't,  that's another issue that the higher ups in the organization should seriously consider addressing.

Well, we know of at least one who sleeps while driving.

I can only comment on what I know from my son.  I don't know if any players did actually drink and drive, but you're right.

  It's a scary situation.

I think back to the death of a woman that former St. Louis Fams DE Leonard Little caused because he was driving drunk.

I don't know for sure, but I think the players stayed in a local hotel close to the stadium only during the Coughlin era.  They also don't ride a team bus to the airport for away games, they pretty much drive themselves for the most part.

My guess is in general there are many more NFL players that drink and drive than we want to believe is the case.
Well screw him then. He's been given the keys to a multi-million dollar franchise. If you don't wanna be responsible for it then hit the road.

This would indicate that they do.

"I returned to the stadium this morning to rejoin my coaches and teammates as we continue to prepare for the San Diego Chargers on Sunday. This past weekend was a challenging time for my family and me because of an emergency medical condition that developed while I was with my team at the hotel.
Damn. We could've had Carr. Dude is humble, nice guy, settled down, legit baller and actually works hard. What a strike out, Dave.

The team hotel on a road game.

During the Coughlin era, the team used to stay at the Hyatt Regency if I remember correctly the night before a home game.

It was a home game. They were preparing for SD when he returned but the game he first missed was a home game against the Packers week one..

If Bortles was really out the night before the Raiders game drinking then he should be benched for that alone. That isn't a leader thinking about his team. That's just being selfish, man.
