You can argue about him coming back or not but cap wise it's the perfect move if we planned on keeping him.
Basically no risk from us and everything to gain if he does somehow take that big step forward. Good move.

We are 28 million under, and if we aren't going for another QB, we don't need the cap this year. I hope they put all the gaurenteed money up front so we have a better cap in the future when we will actually need it to resign our defensive stars.
If they plan on tagging or re-signing ARob we do need it. It also wouldn’t hurt to take a look at the guard market this year in free agency.
So now the question becomes...how does this affect the draft? Do we draft a QB in the first round...or do we go all in to give Blake more weapons, with a TE and a guard? If we go the latter route, I'd like to draft another WR too.
I'm a little surprised he accepted this deal considering it's only for an extra $7.5 guarantee to lock up his rights for 2 years beyond 2018. That's very team friendly. As much as I was ready to move on, that was very generous of him to sign such a deal, so thanks Blake! I suppose if he goes off this season he could always hold out next year or in 2020 if he feels he's outperformed his contract.
We're still probably drafting a QB to replace Henne, but at least the rook won't be forced to start early and may not ever if Blake takes another big step this season.

It will get trashed because Blake but it's a much plan than just having him play on the option.
If you keep him on the option and he balls out this year then you have to pay either pay him another 25 million guaranteed on the franchise tag, or sign him to a mega contract.
Option tag + franchise tag = 45 guaranteed over 2 years.
This is 26 at most for 3 years.

I don't think it changes anything. If a guy they really like is there, I think they pull the trigger still, but they're not forced to take a guy just to take a guy high. I will be shocked if we haven't drafted Henne's replacement by round 4 though.

Well the deal looks to be loaded with incentives. So if he does what he’s supposed to do he’ll get those bonuses.
Never thought I'd say at this point we need another WR. Just not sold on Hurns or Lee.

Also there is the added bonus on if we draft a QB and he is mind blowing and we find a trade partner for Bortles his contract is now rather tradable.

We'd all love another Blackmon type talent, he was good from day one. Sadly he let other things get in the way of football. Problem is though, it cost a 5th overall pick to get someone like him.
I think they'll likely draft a WR at some point in this draft. I think Lee is gone, simply a $$ numbers game.
ARob isn't going anywhere. Him, Hurns, Cole, Westbrook, rookie/Mickens is a very fine looking group going into next season imo.
Receiving TE is what really needs to be added.

Given the length of the deal and the guaranteed dollars it pretty much tells us the front office sees Bortles as no more than a bridge QB. I firmly believe we will still be drafting a QB this year but now we aren’t “forced” to take one early out of necessity.

Oh I agree. I think they're probably taking one earlier than the 4th, but you just never know how the draft is going to fall with so many variables at play.
Mixed feelings on this one. It’s team friendly...but with no competition will Blake rest on his laurels? Are we at peak Bortles? Guess we will find out in 2018. An intriguing season it will be indeed
He still could be cut after this year if he does not perform better then he has and they draft somebody.
Wow, very team friendly. A few posters floated this possibility and I absolutely thought it had no shot of happening. The team has some flexibility now.

That's absolutely right. It's a 1 year $26.5 million deal with 2 additional option years. It's not a ringing endorsement "that's my quarterback" type of deal. It is a deal that gives the team time to find a franchise QB and there's still a small chance Blake might become that guy.
