What a buffoon!  On TV this morning he was asked about his challenger, said the guy was clearly the more articulate and better candidate among the Dem primary, even if he was a longshot.  And then said the guy supports all these socialists causes, open border, eliminating ICE and that the people of Florida shouldn't "monkey this up" by putting in a guy with those policies.

Now I dont know much about DeSantis.  Assuming is a smart guy.  Yale, Harvard Law.  But how in the world do you make a statement like that?  As a conservative in the political arena, the Left will always try to paint you as a racist.  Bush was a racist.  Romney.  Before all these over the top homages, McCain was a racist.  If they caught you sifting out the black jelly beans because you dont like the taste of licorice, it would be your subconscious racism.  And everyone knows this.  So how in the world do you make a slip up like this?  Do you not prepare yourself in the slightest?

I have no idea if he has any history of racism.  If this is a trend, then it's very possible he is a racist.  If not I suppose you should give him the benefit of the doubt that maybe this is a phrase he uses all the time and had no ill will.  But gimme a break.  What a boob.
Yes indeed they will try to make this some sort of racist statement.
It will surely get some people riled up. But it won't have any standing impact, imo.
The expression isn't racist in any way or derived from racism like "Call a spade a spade"

DeSantis for Governor!
Will try to make this a racist statement?

When was the last time anyone used the word "monkey" as a verb and it wasn't about race?
Ron DeSantis = The Boy From Fox, aka Trump's lap dog.
DeSantis wins this one by a long shot. Of course unless people want Florida to look like Venezuela.
Quote:Fox News host Sandra Smith said Wednesday that the network did not condone Rep. Ron DeSantis's ® language when he warned voters not to "monkey this up" by voting for his Democratic gubernatorial opponent Andrew Gillum.

DeSantis's remark about Gillum, who would be Florida's first black governor if elected, prompted quick backlash, with the state Democratic Party chair saying he was "launching his general election campaign with racist dog whistles."
“A little while ago, we had Ron DeSantis, the Republican nominee for governor in Florida on for an interview to discuss the Florida election,” Smith said on Fox News’ “America’s Newsroom” before reading a statement from DeSantis's campaign clarifying his earlier remarks.
"We do not condone this language and wanted to make our viewers aware that he has since clarified his statement," she added.

Whatever your take on DeSantis, he's a moron for thinking he could use the term "monkey" whilst referring to a black candidate for office and not get reaction.

The question is, did he actually want this reaction?  I don't know enough about the man to speculate whether or not he's attempting to attract racist voters to his fold or not, but it's an idiotic thing to say if he did it casually, and it's a despicable thing if he did it strategically.

I doubt it was strategic.  If you’re a white guy running against a black guy, I think right there you automatically have the hard core racist vote.  Not knowing much about him either, nor reading into the story or his explanation, I’d assume it was a slip.  Unless I’ve been surrounded by racists, all my life, I’ve heard that phrase plenty without even thinking twice about it.  I guess I look at the phrase like that song by the Monkees.  When they say “people say we monkey around’. I was little. Maybe they were racist and I was just too naive at the time.

DeSantis is a Trumpette and supposedly well educated. You don't think he knew what he was saying?

He's either using a racist dog whistle (expect more) or he's too stupid to be governor.

What is it with the right wing being ok with these Ivy-League educated elitists telling us how to live? DeSantis is a "of the people" kind of guy? Right.

Venezuela - hahahaha. Yeah, I'm really worried about the next governor's foreign policy.

It's good to know I no longer need to watch Special Report with Brett Baier. I get their talking points straight from you. Thanks.

All of the time, actually.

They were going to paint him as a racist anyway.

The dog whistle take is stupid. His opponent is black and he is white. What more does he need to do to attract white racists. Really, he had nothing to gain by using that word. The reality is this is just another exemplification of how some on the right are hilariously tone deaf and continue to present horrible optics.

Very possible simple explanation ^

Trump was called a racist for saying Omarosa was a "dog".

Everything is considered racist to those seeking it out. This is a common phrase--not to monkey something up. I simply don't care if someone chooses to get offended because they want to claim a word / phrase and assign motive when, had they not been black, they would not have otherwise had a reason to believe it was racist.

If we ignore the concept of John Q. Public being overly offended entirely   -  It's still an ill-advised choice of words by someone who ought to know better.  Folks absolutely get offended too easily, but there's too much history with this particular inference to just ignore it IMO.

I mean is that too much political correctness to ask of a politician of any ilk?  "Please don't associate an African American with a monkey while running for public office?"  Seems pretty reasonable to me.

Regarding the first part in bold, yes some people do get "offended" way too easily in today's society.  I put it in quotes because some things are twisted to make it appear offensive even though that wasn't the intent.  I believe that was the case in this "incident" (non-story).

Regarding the second part in bold, DeSantis did not associate his opponent with a monkey with his statement.  The phrase "monkey it up" is a nice way of saying not to [BLEEP] (mess) it up without using profanity and was directed or associated with the voters of Florida not his opponent.
Non story. Anyway didn't you folks know? Every white republican is racist and have been since they didn't vote for Obamantion.
