The Houston Texans are going young at the punter position. The team cut veteran Shane Lechler on Friday. The 42-year-old Lechler does not plan on retiring.
Well the young guy flat outplayed him during the preseason. Better to let a guy go a year early than a year late. Now they have their long term replacement.

Guess Kern was better than Lechler afterall...
Some small part of me saw the "NFL.com - Texans release..." in the sidebar and hoped it said J.J. Watt.

What can I say, the young kid with a powerful leg that's 20 years younger just went out and stole his job. Lechler didn't lose it (He had a 61 yard punt last night), the UDFA young buck just went out there and took it. Surprised the hell out of me and I'm sure it surprised the Texans too. Trevor Daniel punted so well they probably knew they had no shot at sneaking him on to the practice squad.
Watching this UDFA punt though makes me scratch my head even harder about what the hell were the Jags thinking about drafting a freaking punter #70 ovrl (Very high 3rd round pick), especially given all their needs then? LOL, man Gene Smith was HORRRRIBLE! I miss that guy.
Oh well, back on topic.. Lechler will land on his feet, Houston just couldn't pass up possibly solidifying the position for the next decade with a great looking young talent. Lechler at the age 42 worked under a 1 year contract, every year. Good luck to him though/wish him the best and I thoroughly enjoyed his time here.. one of the greatest in NFL history.

I was waiting for this to come back up!

I knew it was going to come back up, but it still doesn't change my previous opinion. Lechler at 42 had one of his best years last season (Nobody could've foreseen Trevor Daniel doing what he did).. We'll see if Kern is still a top punter a decade from now (if he's still in the league) or see if he can repeat the career year he had last season.

Well, you won't get any argument from me that Lechler is an outstanding punter.
He will catch on somewhere soon.
Congrats to the kid who beat out the greatest punter of all time. Hope he chokes when the real games start. Lol
