Telvin Smith has been bad, don’t know what the hell people are watching. No game changing plays, no resistance in the run game, getting torched in the passing game, etc.. Watching Jaylon Smith last night he looks way better than Jack and is actually effective against the run and all over the field. Both our starting linebackers and in my opinion Barry Church with some help from the line not sacking good, has killed this defense this year and is keeping it from performing at an elite level. And let everyone tell it including this defense they considered themselves a generational defense so what’s up with this offense excuse?

That 2000 Ravens’ defense didn’t give a damn about what their offense was doing, they made it happen. Now if they’re just good or ok then fine let’s blame the offense for their shortcomings, but if you’re one of the best to ever do it on that side of the ball, stop with the excuse making. If you’re out there too long then get sacks and turnovers and put the struggling offense in position to win.The only game I slightly give em a pass was the Titans game and even then they couldn’t get off the field when they needed to. Thing about running your mouth about how good you are usually means you have to work hard as hell in the off season and practice to back it up.
On 1010 this morning Lags said Telvin had the worst game of his career last week in London. Also said that he was reportedly one of the 9 out that night of the incident and that as a captain that was unacceptable.

Exactly. This is the real problem. its also a problem in our society. We need someone or some group to blame. No one wants to take ownership and just become an Alpha and do work. Everyone wants to blame the other side of the ball or throw tantrums and catch attitudes, etc. We need that swag back. It starts in the trenches and spreads to the LBs and DBs.
Telvin got paid and lost his motivation. His game was dependent on big plays driven by his hunger. He ate the bologna. It's interesting how he's so terrible in pass coverage given he's the fastest linebacker in the league. That's just knowing where to be, really no excuse for it. Sounds like he might be hungover on walkthroughs on Saturday's not paying attention.

Thanks for that insight, Dr. Phil.

I love how people just make stuff up, like they really know these guys. But we watch on tv so we have the inside story.

Was his game not based off big plays? He's trash in run defense and always was weak in pass coverage. He made up for everything because he has a knack for the football. He's a playmaker, a true football player. Always in the right spot at the right time. Amazing instincts. I love that about him, but he's not making any plays this season. One has to wonder... why so?

The idea of players being payed and it causing their play on the field to digress is something new to you? New to sports I see. Welcome. Preparation and attention to detail are important, and it puts you in position to make plays.

Gosh, and you said he was instinctual.

No, I can't think of another player where money affect instincts.  Keep trying.

Ummm not sure if you're thinking of animals or something. This is the big leagues, you prep to be in the right spots and then let instincts take over... he isn't in the right spot ever. This is what coaches do with good players, put them in positions to succeed. You can't just show up, say hey I'm a fooseball player, and make all pro plays.

So did Telvin's inate talent and instinctive play just go away because he went out on a Friday night, because he got a contract, or because you need to make more bad lunch-meat jokes?

Which is it?

LOL

If you read his instincts are not in question, they never will be. He's playing as if he's unprepared. All you need to do is watch the games to see that. His payday came because of BIG PLAYS. He is a non factor in the run game and is out of position constantly in pass coverage. When was he ever good at either? Seriously when? lol it's a joke I even have to make that point. He's an instinctual football player, playmaker at heart, BUT you have to be in position to make plays... that comes from time and preparation. For a LB, lots of time and preparation. Understanding tendencies and capitalizing on them, that's what made Telvin special. Could money make a pro athlete relax a bit? Do I even have to answer that?

Lemme guess, Telvin is playing bad because he is injured? Ah yes, the resident injury excuse man to the rescue.

You're all over the map here. I'll just try to give you a more reasonable take that doesn't make so many assumptions.

You asked when he's ever been good in the run game or in pass coverage. He's been very good in both for a significant portion of his time in the league. He wouldn't have received the contract he signed if that weren't the case. We'll chalk that one up to just being more silly hyperbole from you.  Having lapses in those categories at times is very different from never being any good. C'mon. That's silly.

All that we are seeing this season is Telvin letting some bad habits that he's displayed in the past to creep back in coupled with him trying to do too much at times and getting caught out of position as a result.
It's been pretty ugly in a few games.  But it's not the end of the world. Just a re-focus on technique and staying patient/gap-sound should get him back on track.

BTW - that capitalizing on tendencies thing you mention is accurate - but its a double-edged sword. And it's gotten him in trouble a few times this year when he guessed wrong about a QB, TE, or RB's tendency and wound up outsmarted.

I don't buy the notion that he's gotten lazy after a payday. It's against his character in every way according to numerous teammates and coaches that have been unnecessarily outspoken concerning his work ethic and the ways in which he leads by example - much like his mentor.  I don't buy it.

Do I think his coaches could help him get his game back on track? Yes. Do I think all of those discussions have already been taking place? Yes. Probably for several weeks now. Telvin just needs to slow down his brain a bit on the field and not overreact and over pursue. He just needs to play smarter.  He's capable. Hopefully he gets it settled down in Indy.

No one brought up injury, even though he has left two games for a few plays due to injury, I don't see that as a factor here like I do for the offensive line.  Very different scenarios.
The offense is putrid. The rules do not favor defense. You are not getting a Ravens all time defense in this era. There is a previous thread asking if we built it wrong. If it had worked like Cadwell designed the answer would be no but injuries and lack of player growth and stability has made it tough.
(11-05-2018, 06:31 PM)Jags02 Wrote: [ -> ]The Jaguars have clearly fallen off in a few categories from last year, in particular rushing, sacks and turnovers, however, we still have the best pass defense in the league. Our secondary is still balling.

The Jaguars only have 19 sacks this season which is tied for 23rd (the Vikings are #1 with 31 sacks). Despite no longer being top two in sacks, no longer controlling the clock with our running game, and no longer racking up turnovers, our secondary is still the best in passing yards allowed. The Jaguars are allowing 190.0 passing yards per game. 2nd place is the Ravens with 205.2 and then the Bills with 212.0.

Here are a few more stats to consider...
  • #2 in total defense with 313.2 yards allowed
  • #4 in completion percentage allowed at 60.6%
  • #2 in YPA allowed at 6.7 (Ravens are #1 at 6.3)
  • tied for #2 in passing TDs allowed with 9
  • #3 in first downs allowed by passing
  • #2 in longest passing play allowed at 42 yards
  • #2 in 20+ yard plays allowed with 19
  • tied for #4 in 40+ yard plays allowed with 2

Passing yards is not a category I care about, when teams run on us all day, and score with ease.
We need Poz to come out of retirement to get the defense right on the run game.

So... you wrote this whole thing to reiterate my point. Which is he needs to get back to the basics of technique and preparation. Cool, agreed. Whether it's him showing up hungover on Saturday morning before a game and having a career bad game or the money changing him... something isn't right. I sure hope the money didn't change him, but honestly we don't know.

Negative. Again not sure why I have to be repetitive but here we go. Telvin Smith: a football player. Meaning, he has those football instincts built in. Was hungry. Was. Outside looking in.... money changed him. I'd expect a down year to check em.
