Can the personnel we have run a zone scheme?  Would it help them or hurt them?

I think for me I am open to trying. I do recall that our zone blocking scheme with Gus Bradley wasn’t exactly a world beater.

The main trait you need in a zone blocking olineman is quick feet, and the main traits you need in a zone blocking running back are vision and short area quickness. Our personnel is about as polar opposite to a ZBS skill set as you can get.

We actually may have the type of offensive lineman to run a zone blocking scheme, but what would be even better is if they ran a zone scheme when they need to.

You would think since our Head Coach is an offensive lineman coach that we could do this.

Every offense runs zone and gap anyway.

The 49ers offense run game is built around the outside zone but that requires a very specific type of line/rbs and specialist coaches like Kubiak or Shanny himself , we have none of those

To run what the 9er's run, you have to have a certain type of back. Fournette is not that type of guy. It also really helps to have a really good FB like the 9ers have as well. That is one things this team is missing badly, a really good FB. Fournette shines when he has a really good lead blocking FB.

One of if not the best blocking FB ad well.  A position we dont even have.  We had Greg Jones at that time as well

It's more of a beat down than a passing attack. Getting run over play after play lets the other team know they have no chance to stop you.

I have always been a fan of the zone scheme in the run blocking department. Mike Shanahan did it for years. Kyle Shanahan is now using it because he learned it from his old man. I believe Gary Kubiak used it when he was with the tinhorns and he had a say in it potentially with the Vikings. 

Not 100% sure if Stefanski uses it or not but it'll be interesting to see what he does in Cleveland with those runners there. Especially with Chubb. 

They need to try something different though because the last two years have been hard to watch.

Thought you were describing the wrong game - but there were 7 minutes left in the third at 9-7 steelers before the 2 INTs.

We were up 20-9 then had an 8 minute drive to go up 23-9, which is what i'm referring to.

I thought you were referring to the infamous LF hand wave drive that we also ran like a dozen times in. Regardless, I can't agree that that style is so beautiful when it usually means losing.

About what I was going to say. I don't know enough about our line men to know they absolutely couldn't do it to some degree, but Fournette is completely unsuited to it, he has no vision, poor change of direction and bad short area quickness.

The line needs to be overhauled anyway and this is probably Fournette's last year here so maybe they can start moving in that direction, but it probably wouldn't be something that seems like an immediate success unless they get real lucky in the draft.

Our OL isn't bad and I do feel that our new scheme, whatever it'll be, will help their performance(s). I don't feel that we need an major shake up of the OL. If an top O-linemen fall to us then take him, if not, draft one in the latter rounds.
