But this whole he was awful thing is a lie. He was much better than Gabbert, Foles and Kessler. Probably better than Leftwich.

I don't get the hate. He was inconsistent yes.

Where's the hate?

I loved Bortles. His personality, his "can't knock me down" attitude. His toughness.
I even defended him beyond 2017 when people thought we should upgrade with Lamar Jackson etc.

But his game was one of ups and downs, and his lows out numbered his highs by a wide margin.
He was the best we had had in a long while. And was miles ahead of guys like Gabbert and Kessler and McCown and Henne....

But he most certainly WAS awful sometimes. Just putrid. Sometimes right after having a 300+yard 3+TD game....
Pointing out the reality of who he was/is as a QB isn't hate.

Same way pointing out that Leftwich had a canon and was a smart QB that couldn't stay healthy enough to do anything of value isn't hate.
Or that Garrard was a good QB who, much like Bortles, had a habit of throwing bone headed INTs that would absolutely cost us games isn't hate.
It's called criticism which has been well earned. And people like myself who defended Bortles until they were blue in the face and pretty much until he was no longer rostered have earned the right to criticize the dude. And the people who called it after year 3 have the right to say "I told you so".
Blake is bake......i agree
If this happened, I would weep tears of sweet joy. Minshew may be my QB now, but Blake was my first QB. It’s like that ex girlfriend that you’ll always still love. The BOAT is forever cemented as a Jaguars legend in my book.
NFL is making game rewind free till May. Watch some Bortles games and you will realize it wasn't all his fault but he was just a durable guy that was handcuffed by coaching, gameplans but most of all his mechanics.

Watching Minshew games, I see the same poor game plans and coaching but he didn't play as great as the in season excitement made it feel. Now that said he has the appearance of a higher ceiling with good instincts compared to other QBs we have been saddled with in our days.

This was my take on Minshew as well. He had some stretches where he looked really good but I think the overall assessment of his play is biased by his "wow" moments of which there were a few. But there were times he struggled too especially after O'Shaughnessy went down. We'll have to not lose sight of the fact that he *was* a rookie and see how he progresses this coming season.

On the topic of another Jags QB, I'm watching some of the replays as well and I'm reminded that David Garrard was a much better QB then he's usually given credit for. He was never an all-star but he was usually very good despite being handicapped by some attrocious wide receiver groups.

Yes, Del Rio's penchant for big, lumbering receivers really did Garrard and Leftwich no favors. Wilford and Williams were scrappy blockers, but Wilford should have been converted to a move tight end and Williams should've just been a WR3/red-zone specialist or brought in on run-heavy packages. Mattloaf should've never been drafted, but his addiction issues and alligator arms were not known at draft time.
As a backup?

He'd be the best we have had in ten years. Just for fun, noticed that yet another Jags starting QB recently won a Super Bowl as backup for another team, joining Brunell, Leftwich, and Johnson.

So, following that logic, we need Bortles back to help us be SB champs. Either that, or it's Gabbert (who will also probably win a championship on another team as a backup). And no one wants that.

Gabbs is backing up the GOAT in Tampa. You should get in on those odds while they're hot!

When fans talk about how good a WR can block, it makes me think of an offensive lineman that can catch.

Meaning if that offensive lineman sucked at blocking, would fans say “but he did have good hands to catch the ball in the passing game”

As long as that WR that can block somebody's jaw off plays like Hines Ward in the receiving game I completely cool with that aspect of his game being mentioned.

Fair point. He was fun to watch in that play-off race against Pittsburgh and Buffalo back in 2017. I really had hopes for that kid. Thought he had finally turned the corner. I don't think everything was his fault. Poor coaching plays a role. Poor leadership from the front office down also plays a role.

But he was a likable guy for the most part. He was tough. Made some plays here and there when he had to. But when he was bad. . . he was BAD. Brutally bad. I don't think he'll ever be in a Jaguars uniform again. But I think because of his likable nature he may end up starting again at some point.

Surprised New England hasn't swooped him up yet. Miami should be looking at him as well. And that could still end up being a landing spot for him by the time training camp or preseason is supposed to start. As many questions that the QB class has this year and with so many teams looking at new starters this year he's bound to land somewhere he can potentially start again.

I think downfield blocking ability for a WR is a worthwhile skill and can make a world of difference. I remember that Hines Ward block that pretty much ended the career of that Bengals LB (Keith Rivers maybe?).

IIRC, that block was legal then but has since been outlawed. Not a lot of WR's would want to even initiate that contact. Sure, WR blocking ability isn't high on the list but it's an attribute.

I always thought the Jags should have moved Guy Whimper to TE.
