Exactly right. The question is, why would Caldwell pick a 3-4 outside backer for our scheme?  He has made ridiculous personnel decisions like this constantly.  Fowler was not a fit for our D either.  I'm not a fan of our scheme, but if that is the direction you choose to go, at least acquire players who fit it.

I think the bigger question is, why is Caldwell still our GM?
The problem is we have no 3 4 ends. Echoing what was said by a previous poster, Hamilton more than likely could transition to DE if we drafted someone like Shelvin who really stands out to me as a first round NT. We still need another DE as Woods provides a one year stop gap there.

Also, switching would eliminate players like Smoot, Bryan, and Jones. Plus we would need some backup ILBs. That's quite the overhaul.

According to some people here Smoot can be a 3-4 DE... Confused

I think Bryan is gone anyway. Jones could be too. There's lots of linebackers every draft and we have a ton of picks and plenty of cap.
Anytime any team switches defenses it requires a bit of an overhaul and that first year tends to be tough...

I think if Allen and Chaisson are our starting rush backers, the 34 ends and backup ILBs are easier to get without using a lot of premium draft capital or a ton of cap space.

He can play 3 4 OLB but considering his deal is up soon, there's no reason to re-sign him at 6 mil to be a backup.
