It wasn't just QB. He didn't give Joeckel any competition either after he was proven suckage. Even when Joeckel got over the torn ACL they handed him the LG guard uncontested and that predictably went bad too. So far they have given Cam an entire rookie contract of next to no competition either despite him being completely awful and also having a major knee injury.

No one and I mean no one, is as bad as Gene Smith.

So very this.

Gene Smith was a great scout if you wanted to find someone nobody else was looking at. He was so gunshy about risk of failure that he would always opt for the high floor/low ceiling guy, and too often fell in love with one player and wasted value picking them where our selections were, rather than moving around to fit the pick to the player. What free agents did he bring in? What great trades did he make?

Caldwell's downfall was putting too much weight on holes in the roster, again picking guys who were either bad fits (Chiasson, Joeckel), or reaching for a position, and leaving much more talented players on the board (Bort, 4net). When all is said and done, his two biggest blunders will probably be extending Bort and signing Foles, as both failed to pan out and both smacked us hard in the cap. I don't know whether those were truly his decisions or not, and we may never know.

Recency bias HAS to be in play if you think Dave was worse than Gene. It's comparing apples to octopi.

He traded the pick to the Patriots that they used to take Gronk, that's a pretty great trade.

Oh, did you mean for the Jaguars? Hm...

That's all you need to say about who is the worst.

People laugh about it now but at the time most people were like "we got a starter! how many 3rd rounders are instant starters? he is gonna be the best Punter in the league! we needed one after Matt Turk! will people complain when he has multiple pro bowls??"

Please cite your source on that one.

I get that I did some crazy things in college, and that was over 8 years ago, but I don't recall any such sentiment.

I don't think we can source it because of the board change, but he remembers it as I do, there was a LOT of rationalization about that pick on the draft thread.

Same here, especially the instant starter bit.

100% people were rationalizing it, not everyone, but a large amount. Till the season started and Wilson started playing. That was the death toll for Gene, and hiring Mularkey after he was about to get fired from the falcons. I hated that hire from the beginning, but the ‘Gene we trust’ took a long time to wear off. I think losing Vic and how spectacularly bad Gene was forever broke the hive mind that was on this board. There is much less consensus now. When you posted something against the grain back then, you heard it a lot more. Now we have all kinds of crazy with mods who actually disagree with each other rather than walking in lockstep. More balanced IMO.

It also helps that we aren't officially the Jaguars board anymore, no need for people to Johnny-O their comments.
