You have a point. Mascots and nicknames are fun, but they're not necessary for sports.
If a mascot or a nickname starts being a source of controversy rather than fun, why keep it?

Would be a lot harder for teams to move if branding was made towards the city rather than unrelated logos like Jaguars.
Jacksonville Football Team much harder to move to London as they need a whole new name/logo/uniform etc so essentially become a new team with no history. Whilst can just plonk London in front of Jaguars and continue on as things are.

Navajo Nation is who had been pushing for the Redskins to be changed. I wonder if they were pushing for this as well. The funny thing is, according to a couple of polls done in 2016.....
