I'm with the op Caldwell deserves some of the blame 4 years in were still woefully undertalented on both lines.

He found an idiot bobblehead that wouldn't mind staining his entire career in Jacksonville. He got a players coach that would take all the blame in these four years, and then have time to build the roster. He's going to land the next coach and we'll win a Super Bowl.

Dave Caldwell is a genius.

Haha you might be saying this full of sarcasm, but it could be true. This did give him time to build a decent roster from scratch. Job stability for atleast 6 years is hard to come by in the NFL.
When Caldwell first hired Gus he said he hired him because he knew the team would do a lot of losing and they would need a positive guy who could hold them together. He never said anything about hiring Gus to win. Time to move on.

Quote:In 2013 I wanted Ansah

In 2014 I wanted Mack in the first and then Garappolo in the second

In 2015 I wanted Cooper or Beasley

Minus Beasley, had we just followed that drafting pattern we'd be a lot better off right now. And I'm just a regular fan! How can i make better picks than a guy whose supposed to be one of the 32 best talent evaluators in the league?
I can play this game too - especially in hindsight. So to even things out, who would you take in the first and second rounds of this upcoming draft? I'll let the CFB season play out and then we will hold you to your word Nostradamus.

Idk yet, depends on where we pick. If we're picking top 3 again I'm taking Myles Garrett easily but have to see how he tests at the combine.

Nah, the oline has been together like 3 weeks, they'll be fine if Beachum is ok.

The biggest obstacle to the D is that they're being "coached" by Captain Loosie Goosie and his Bobblehead Brigade sidekick Ink Stain. Did you see the Eagles D tonight? We could'a had Jim Schwartz running this talented but woefully obstructed bunch and terrorize the league. Maybe next year the leadership will help rather than hinder.
For the most part Dave has been as good as any other GM I believe. His drafting and FA acquisitions have been on par or better IMO. He deserves maybe 10% of the blame.

His biggest flaw is simply that he holds on to his pet projects too long. Not just holds on to them, but banks on them.

-Not bringing in a viable guard or center in a completely loaded IOL FA class and simply trusting that both Beachum would get healthy and Joeckel would slide in seamlessly was unwise.

-Not bringing in anyone at SS and just trusting that Sample would stay healthy and would prove to be capable competition for Cyp was a mistake.

-Keeping the Chris Smith project alive over Holmes was a flagrant mistake that was incredibly obvious instantly. I'm sure he thought he could get Tyrone to the PS and finesse a way to keep them both, but Holmes was not that much of a draft sleeper and then showed out big time in the preaseason, Him not getting claimed was a pipe dream.

-And lastly Gus, nothing needs to be said about that project.
