I don't like the results and it is a reason for concern. Last night there were some reasons for the poor performance. Our best two run blocking lineman were out, chark was out and Jones Jr went out during the game so there was reasons for the lack of a running game and also the passing game. The performance was still sub par even under the conditions stated. Pass blocking was once again terrible during the first half and only improve as the saints pulled starters. Beathard has had the most success due to getting more time in the pocket playing against back ups. He still passes the eye test with quick and accurate passes and his ability to move the team. He has earned the backup position and it is time to stop playing the quarterback competition game. That train has left the station and LT and CJ have established the 1,2 positions. This week TL needs get all the reps in practice, any continuation of a QB competition will hinder his preparation for opening day. Trevor has improved as the game went on even under the worst conditions for a quarterback to succeed when under constant pressure. Even the best quarterbacks performance decreases under constant pressure. Just watch the super bowl and Mahomes performance under constant pressure, it wasn't pretty. The Media will dog Trevor but a rookie under the conditions he had to play in, No running game and constant pressure was an exceptional performance by a young with no NFL experience. We need the starters to play three quarters against Dallas and we need to open up the playbook to evaluate just where the team stands in the rebuild going into the season. If Both lineman are still out then I guess you play Trevor a quarter and if he is not under constant pressure into the second quarter. Have I lowered my expectations for this year somewhat but I'm not ready to jump off a building yet.

Neither the Saints or Browns were doing anything special either (the Browns without their starters) and they still lined up and beat the crap out of us. You are placing an extraordinary amount of weight on the schemes to overcome our glaring deficiencies.

No I'm not.
I'm placing many years of watching preseason football and being duped by it above freaking out right now.

Yeah man, all those preseasons where we use vanilla schemes and get our butts kicked.

Curious, what were your expectations?  Hopes are certainly taking a hit for me, but my expectations of a 6-7 win season are still about the same.  After being the worst team in the league last year, it would still be a significant improvement.

Laughing funny that some people do believe that
While I'm not going to wet the bed like the OP did, I do find myself having to keep in mind that we are building upon a VERY weak foundation. It's not like this was a franchise that was an HC or QB away from playoff contention. It's going to take time to build. It's going to be rough going along the way. On top of that, I also have to remind myself that so much change in one offseason is going to lead to a lot of wrinkles in need of ironing out. The purpose of the preseason is not to obliterate the opponent, it's to evaluate the roster, identify plays and schemes that suit the players, and be ready for when the games actually matter. If the final score was that important, TLaw and the starters would be playing into the fourth quarter every game.

Anyone who expected us to be instantly fixed with either new coaches, new GM or even new QB was fooling themselves. At this stage all we can do is hope that we got at least one of the choices right, and have something positive to build upon.

Be patient. If we did hit on at least one, it will get better.
Weird a 1-15 team with a new coach without NFL experience hasn't shown well in the preseason? Wait the oline that was a sieve has the same guys back and we aren't lighting it up?

I didn't get to watch and honestly I don't think we will fix much other than QB this season. Outside that consensus pick, the draft was meh. We will need time to see changes. I just hope this current franchise iteration isn't another bust because it has been crude for so long.
I will do my best to reserve judgement on the season until the first quarter of the season is over.

Honestly though, I started off with low expectations for this regime and it feels like they reinforce that feeling at every opportunity. Hopefully I am just dead wrong about Meyer and Balke and we head into next year with a bright future.

To the board's credit, I don't recall anyone complaining about the score beyond what occurred in the first quarter or two.
It sure would be comforting to see this team perform better than a broken lawn chair though.
Anyone who has that "it's just preseason" mentality is just delusional.

Do you believe they game planned for the Saints last night? That they called any but the most basic of coverages and blitzes? That they tried hard to establish the run?

Do you think any of those things will be done differently in three weeks against the tinhorns? Will it matter if they are?

In order for that to matter you have to believe that our gameplanning will be orders of magnitude better than our opponents gameplanning, because they will be ramping up the gameplans too and their players have thus far been the ones that are orders of magnitude better.
Greatest preseason stat ever: the 2008 Detroit Lions went 4-0

The euphoria didn't last an entire quarter of the regular season opener at Atlanta.  Then rookie QB Matt Ryan looked like he was going to be inducted into the HOF by halftime, as he and high price UFA RB Michael Turner led the Falcons to a first quarter 21-0 lead over the Lions.

On the other side of the coin, Marv Levy's Buffalo Bills teams that reached 4 straight Super Bowls didn't have a winning record in any of those 4 pre-seasons.

Yeah, I wasn't really calling anyone out in that respect, but more to say that preseason is more for putting your entire roster out on the field in various situations to evaluate their skill rather than to worry about the W-L record before week 1.

Not saying that week 1 is going to be night and day different from how we've looked so far in the games that don't count (I think this is the OP's point), but I also pray that we show SOME improvement once we have starters not sitting out to rest minor injury and have coaches planning a full game around a much less varied scope of roster talent.
I'm not worried.  We have a much better team on paper than last year, lots more talent.  We'll get better.  New Orleans is a really good team.

I actually missed the game last night because of a family emergency, so maybe that's why I'm not all negative today like everyone else.

This isn’t every year. (Even though it did happen in 2017)

This preseason features two new coordinators who have doubled  down on not showing their cards and have been transparent about it.

I’m fine taking them at their word for now.

You feel free to assume Bevell is going to be just like Hackett and Olson if you like.

I’m good waiting to see what he’s actually got cooking.
I think most people are just used to this team being preseason champs.. 3-4 weeks of positivity before reality sets in..
Just numb about what has happened so far in this dreadful, disastrous never ending nightmare of a preseason...and ENT's horrible injury(from what rumors say). still one more preseason game left for #BecauseJaguars to strike again....

Everything has turned out okay, thanks, Bullseye.
