He's seriously been awful the past couple seasons.  I wouldn't hate bringing him in to see if he can reclaim some of that 2017/18 play, but he's really not much of an upgrade on what we have, and even if he is, that's more of an indictment on our guys.  There's a reason Dallas brought in 3 new LBers this offseason and released him despite not saving any money off this year's cap.

He made the Pro Bowl in 2019, so he hasn't been awful. In fact, on that ESPN show (Get Up) they were saying what an odd move it was to release him, especially since he was playing so well and since Leighton Vander Esch seems to be hurt all the time. They were speculating that something maybe has occurred with him off the field or in the locker room that led to this decision. They said they would be listening in the coming days to see if they could get any more information, because based on his level of play, this made no sense.

Fair, awful may be been a bit of an overstatement, at least for his 2019 season.  Him making the Pro Bowl isn't some sort of validation of his play, though.  Undeserving players routinely make the Pro Bowl, and he was a high profile Cowboy with a good story, a big new contract and had high level play the previous two seasons.  He still hasn't been good the past season+.

Honestly couldn't care less what Get Up has to say, right now he's just a highly paid player that's regressed a lot who was being outplayed by 4 other LBers.  The Cowboys could have sat him on the bench and maybe recouped some value for the same result, but they just released him outright.  Even if Get Up is right that there's something no one is privy to at this point, there's no reason to pursue him then.  No need to add another mediocre player with baggage.

He'd still be the best LB on our team. Wilson flat out sucks and Jack looks lost in this 3-4 scheme. It's becoming clear that Jack is purely a 4-3 LB. He just doesn't fit this new scheme. Personally, I think OLB and ILB should be high priorities for us in the next draft.

Yeah, just look at the above post by Senor Fantastico.  Even if you want to say he'd be our best LB, that's just an indictment on our LBers and not a positive for Smith.  I'd still probably say Jack is better, but it's all bad and help isn't on the way.
I wouldn’t touch Smith. Something is wrong with this guy and he loves to go opposite of where the runner goes.

If I were a free agent and New York offered me $100 million and some smaller market team offered me $20 million, I'd take the lower offer. I'd rather die than live in New York and I could live very well on $20 million, even though it is a lot less. Some players are the same way. Many are motivated by playing for a winner and as poorly as this team is run, we probably aren't going to the playoffs anytime soon.

What a ridiculous thing to say.  You'd give up $80 million?  Even if those two New York teams actually played in New York, which they don't, for an extra $80 million you could live in Connecticut and commute to New York on a helicopter.
Living in Connecticut is almost as bad as living in NY.
Lol Packers are gonna release Smith.

I dunno, everytime I watched the Cowboys he made a good play here and there. Also all their defense was awful last year.
I'd still bring him for cheap, pretty sure he is no worse than Jack and Wilson.
The poster child for the argument not to play in meaningless bowl games.

he was a healthy scratch the last game, and getting sent packing by two teams already this season doesn't bode well for his prospects.

Something is going on there, and I don't want any part of it.
I’d rather have Dylan Moses as a developmental player.
