Because elite receivers are hard to find.
it doesn't take an elite receiver to actually catch the ball. Even the Wilford's & Williams of the world that Garrard was throwing to were relatively sure handed, they just lacked elitism in speed/routes etc. but with Lawrence's accuracy and touch as a rookie, if we could just hang onto the ball the offense could march a little.
