Read your link and understand it.  They recommend you recycle it so that we don't have to import more lithium.  The battery itself isn't poisonous or harmful to groundwater or anything like that.

What about the destruction of the planet digging (using fossil fuels)  for the lithium? That they pack on a barge and ship to China (using fossil fuels) , and ship back (using fossil fuels), that once they are exhausted they are hazardous waste.

We should be running cars on hydrogen, in my opinion. The roads would be constantly wet but meh.

You're right that each of those steps uses fossil fuels, but, they end up using a lot less fossil fuel than a gas powered car does. There is a net savings even after you consider the negatives.
I can see Jag fans using a similar chart to this to show that we won 100% more games this year than last.
