I hope bortles can turn it around but it's looking like he may NOT be the guy.  I really hope the Jags draft a QB really high in this draft because we cannot go into the 2017 season with no plan B.

Agreed.  And there is no stats showing a better running game and Bortles will excel  They have actually shown he lost more with a better running game.

If you want to look at variables -- Gus Bradley. Bortles is 1-1 with no interceptions under Marrone.

And in the last game  Grant out of all rbs rushed for over 100 yards.  We lost.   And stats as a whole.  In games with over 200 yards rushing offense.  Blake has won a whopping 4 games total.

I think since they didn't pick up the 5th year option you'd have to think QB will be a strong consideration in the first few rounds if the value is there at the pick.  Not necessarily to supplant Bortles on opening day this season, but to have someone on the roster already for the 2018 season so we're not going into the next off season without a viable QB on the roster.  They still have until mid May to pick up the option, but if they intended to do so all along, why wait?

They're either waiting to see how the draft shakes out (meaning they're interested in at least one QB in this draft) or they never had any intention of picking up the option.

Honestly, I'd love to see what Brandon Allen can do. He's got such a great, natural deep passing arm that I really want to see him succeed. He could be the next Derek Carr. Just sayin'.

What makes you feel like he can't be the guy? Everyone was on his jock in 2015 after 2000 people like you want to write him off. I want to hear from your point of view why he can't turn it around?

Why rush it?  Right now he is in a prove it scenario.  All of the pressure is on him to be the man.  If he doesn't you move on, if he does you may have to pay more to keep him but at least you'll know you have your guy.  Diamonds are made by putting pressure on coal.  A QB picked up in the 3rd to 5th rounds with a new coaching philosophy should provide all the pressure needed to see what BB is made of this year.  So far I like what he is saying and doing this off season.  Just like most of us here I am hoping he puts it all together and can be the man.

Because alot of players to extend and pay and 18 mill is not chump change.

Because after 3 seasons he is still struggling with the basics.  We should not be discussing his throwing motion or his ability to be consistent going into year 4.  Was that 2015 year a fluke or the real Bortles?  Time will tell.  The fact is you got to have a backup  plan if Bortles continues to struggle making basic NFL throws and reads.
I think they'll be eyeing Nathan Peterman & Jerod Evans between the third - fifth round next week. Peterman was already brought in and evaluated I believe and he's a local product. Evans IMHO looks like a taller version of David Garrard coming out of college.

Coughlin was the one who drafted Garrard so it wouldn't surprise me to see him selected at some point next week at all. He's coming off of a really impressive and productive year out of VT. He has the dual threat ability and size to stand back and wing it.

You know qb's like Matthew Stafford, Tom Brady, and Cam Newton works on a mechanic's to right? I don't think 2015 is a fluke because despite his struggles last year he still threw for 23 touchdowns so let's not act like he went from 35 to 15 TD's.

I would rather pay more later and be sure than pay less and be uncertain.

I've been a proponent of not picking up the 5th year option for a long time.  I think we're taking a QB at some point in this draft just to have someone waiting in the wings for next year or perhaps even to take Blake's place this year if he doesn't progress.  I don't think the person to eventually relieve Blake, if needed, is on the roster at the moment.  As I said before, if they were going to pick up his option they would have done so by now.
Round 1 Fournette, Round 2 O line guard, If the value is there then maybe a QB in round 3. Last year they made Blake stay in Jacksonville and and not attend QB camp and it really set him back. He put in the time this off season and we need to see what the results will be. I still believe he may be in our future but Tom will not put up with a repeat of last year. The lack of a running game put way to much pressure on Blake.  This is his last chance to secure the starting QB position and he deserves that chance.

I really hope we don't do anything stupid and we just ride it out.  Build up the team and make sure whatever happens at QB you have a team that can perform.

Just Agreeing.

NH3...
I think the best plan B would be to draft one of the better QBs in next year's draft after giving Bortles a year to prove he can improve.

I just think drafting a mid-round QB from a weak draft class isn't likely to produce our next franchise QB.
All waiting does is waste the talent on the team now.  And less to work with for less years.  Campbell isnt 25.  Nor is Albert.

I get the urgency to win, but this is not the year to be wasting high-end draft picks on QBs.

Picking one in the first two rounds would be just as big a gamble as sticking with Blake and we could better use the draft picks elsewhere.

And if we picked one in the later rounds I doubt they'd see the field until the season was beyond recovery. If you're going to do that, you might as well wait until the 2018 draft.
