My guess is Tim Kaine would emerge to the top of the Democrat ticket because he's currently the V.P. nominee and that the consensus would be Kaine would be considered more electable than some Democrats considered by many as much further to the Left.
The Democratic Party would have to select a replacement. I feel strongly it would be Joe Biden. First of all, Bernie wasn't a Democrat before he ran, and now that his run is over, he's dropped out of the Democratic party again. No way would it be him.

A move that would work in trumps favor. Bernie supporters would be jumping ship in droves.

Joe Biden would certainly seen like a very realistic possibility. The fact that he has more name recognition than Tim Kaine could prove to be the difference in Biden being the chose.

At the same time though, if Bernie Sanders was the Democrat candidate, many of Hillary Clinton supporters wouldn't vote for him. It's hard to tell what the net plus or minus would be.

Biden can't just step up and just assume the top of the ticket. The VP nominee has no special standing either. Ifa nominee resigns or otherwise drops out of the race after the convention, the party has to select a new nominee.
It's conceivable that Sanders would get the nod in that scenario, if he's not too busy decorating his vacation home.

The Party leadership makes the selection, you know, that same group that conspired against Bernie on Shrillary's behalf. Biden will get the nod.
