Ok so Blake's 5th year option is going to cost the Jags around $18 million and there is no way they'd be willing to do that based off of last years performance right?
So what are our options?
Let him play out next year and let him hit free agency?
Trade him during the draft?
Resign him? (please no)
Based off our visits and private work outs, a QB early is definitely an option. I think if either Watson or Mahomes falls late in round 1 I can see the jags trading up to get one of them to have that coveted 5th year option. Also for some reason I think if we stay put in the 2nd Peterman might be the pick. I'd prefer him in the 3rd but I don't think he falls that far at this point in the draft.
What are y'alls thoughts on our QB options in this draft?
I say stick with Blake. Honestly what makes any of the quarterbacks in this years draft any better of a choice than him? None of them stick out as a can't miss prospect. I say go all in this year with Blake, and lets see if he can turn it around. I believe he can, and in a in a big way. I hate the idea of starting over and committing to at least 2 years of rebuilding. Nothing that Dave, Doug, or even Tom has said this off-season has led me to believe that we are in the quarterback business. I think we are bringing guys in because we are doing our due diligence, and hell you have so many pre draft visits to use anyway that you have to use them on someone. I've been wrong before, and will be again, but I think we are completely committed to Blake for next year. I also fully anticipate us picking up his 5th year option before the deadline because it's only fully guaranteed against injury.
Quote:I hate the idea of starting over and committing to at least 2 years of rebuilding.
I mean they basically said Bortles needed to be rebuilt again as a QB so I guess nothing changes.
I hate the path I think we're going to end up taking because I don't think we'll lose enough games to get a top 5 pick for next year which puts us out of range for the top Qbs.
I say we take Fournette, draft 2 OL in rounds 2-4 with a tight end in the other round, compliment the D with 5-7, and go all in on Jimmy G if he hits the open market.
I think they can pick up the option. There really is not a ton of risk, aside from injury.
If he stinks it up again, you can cut him and that option goes away.
I do think they will draft a mid-round QB. Maybe fourth round. But I doubt that guy comes in and has a shot at taking Blake's job.
I think they like Watson and Mahomes, also Peterman but they wont pick him in the 2nd he would be more of a 3rd or 4th.
Unless they are hiding something I think they will see how things fall and not trade up for one.
No reason not to pick it up honestly. If he performs well and you don't have it, you're going to sign him for more than $18 mil most likely anyway. Just the way the QB market is. If you pick it up and he sucks, you can cut him. It's only guaranteed for injury and as bad as he's had it, he's stayed healthy.
Let's start by taking a look at what the Jaguars have done at QB. So far they've brought in three... Mahomes, Watson and Peterman. Mahomes and Watson were brought in for a private visit, but Peterman they've done a lot of work on. They first talked to Peterman at the combine, and he was the only QB they reportedly talked to at the combine. They later brought him in for a workout... and then most recently they brought him in for an official private interview. I have to think they really like him.
WIth this in mind, let me sort of target where the QBs are going...
Trubisky is going early to either the Jets or Bills if the Browns don't draft him #1 or make a move up from #12 to get him. Mahomes is next to go as several teams are looking at him. The Texans and Saints really want Mahomes, but they'd have to make a significant move up to get him as the Cards appear ready to draft him at #13. In a trade down to the #8 to #12 range, Mahomes suddenly makes a lot of sense. Even if he gets past the Cards, there's talk of a few teams ready to move up to the teens to get him.
For those who miss out on Mahomes but want a QB it's all a matter of just how far Kizer and Watson will slide. The three teams who really appear eager to get one of these two are the Texans, Cheifs and Saints, although you never know who else might be in the mix as the Redskins, Giants and Chargers have also looked at multiple qbs... plus you have top the 49ers, Bears, Jaguars and Jets at the top of round three all capable and possibly willing to trade up for a Kizer or Watson. The Bears in particular have their eye on Kizer. The Chiefs would love to get either Watson or Kizer. The 49ers are looking very intently at Watson as are the Jaguars.
With all this in mind, I'd say you realistically have to get in front of the Texans for a legit shot at Watson. ...or Mahomes should he fall further than I'm thinking. I'm thinking the Dolphins might be open to a trade since they don't have any real glaring needs, although I'm guessing the 49ers and Bears are more likely to make this move. I really don't see any way a top four qb is escaping round one. If any of the four end up when the Chiefs are up, I'm convinced the Chiefs take him... and the Saints should they not trade up... are just praying the Chiefs for some reason do pass.
Having said all that, the real target appears to be Nate Peterman.
Peterman should be on the board when the Jaguars pick in round two unless the 49ers take him, although the 49ers appear to be scouting Davis Webb more intently. Should the 49ers stay put and go QB at #34, it's probably for Webb.
The question then becomes, can we wait until round three with our #68 pick? Now, it's possible. In nfl.com six round mock, I selected Peterman as an available player in round three. So it can happen, but I don't think it's likely. One team to watch closely is the Bills at #44 who have scouted him just as heavily as the Jaguars. Should the Bills get Trubisky in round one, then it's safe to say they won't be going Peterman in round two. ...but otherwise I'm convinced the Bills take Peterman at #44.
Other teams who might want Peterman include...
- the Chiefs who hold the #27 and #59 picks. They're probably thinking Watson or Kizer at #27, but if not try for Peterman at #59.
- The Bears with the #36 and #67 picks talked to Peterman at the senior bowl and again at the combine, however, they brought in Kaaya for a personal visit making me think they might take him over Peterman.
- the Jets with their #39 pick might be in play should they not get Trubisky round one
- the Eagles at #43 worked out Peterman and might want him as insurance behind Wentz.
- The Steelers at #62 are looking at Peterman.
- Finally, the Patriots may want Peterman at #72 having scouted him as well. Would they trade up?
I just don't think he makes it all the way to #68, but I have to think they take him if he's there and I just don't know that they're ready to draft him at #35... they might though. And for that matter they probably would need to get him at #35 if they are going to get him.

Ok...
Don't hold your breath on getting Mahomes or Watson. Either QB would require a trade, and I just don't see it happening.
Nathan Peterman is the one realistic target. Problem is, at #35 it's tough to pass on other payers, and #68 may be too late. Most likely he's going Bills at #44 unless they manage to get Trubisky in round one. Otherwise he might go Chiefs at #59 or Steelers at #62.
Simply put, pray the Bills land Trubisky. If they do, there's a chance Peterman falls to #68.

I don't think the front office is going to be as free wheeling with $18+ million as you would be. If they pick up the option and he has a significant injury this year, it's guaranteed on a player that they'd most certainly have 0 interest in going forward if that's how it plays out. They'd be much better off and it would be more prudent with the $18 million to let him play his [BLEEP] off this year and either give him the long term contract or franchise him. The risk of injury is real and he's not worth the $18 million in 2018 based on what we've seen so far. And I'm not even sure the $18 million dollar figure is accurate. I was looking at the top 10 QB salaries which the average of those is what the option salary is based on and it would be more like $22 mil if it's based on the salaries for 2017. I'm not exactly sure how they're calculating it though.

Flabbergasted I Am.
NH3...
We will not select a QB in the first two rounds. Surpassed round two, this class isn't better than what we already have. If it came down to it, and it hopefully will not, give Brandon Allen his opportunity and if he doesn't progress, look to 2018's draft class for a QB.
NH3...
What I would do is simple. Let Blake play the 2017 season in full barring injury. If he is a wild success, resign him. If he flops, this team likely didn't win many games and is picking top 10 again.. So my theory is, let him hang himself or elevate to the next level. Either way you win, as 2018 has a much stronger QB class.
That is where people are wrong. There is absolutely no reason to wait till 2018 to grab a qb. None. There is no garentees any of the top will end up the top next year. And people mistake the whole weak qb class for they stink. Which many do not. The issue is lack of film or different playing style based on college system.
They are not traditional in any sense. And still remains our number 1 need. Blake is due a lot of money. And with regressing from a strong yet nothing to prove season. (basically always playing from behind) Has done nothing to command that fifth year option. Plus is it worth paying him to let one of the other stars go?
So I could see us trading back in either round to land the qb we want. Though can be very risky. And will depend on what top 3 teams do. And what the Jets and Bills are planning
If you just look at the players the Jaguars have brought in, I'm thinking an ideal draft from their perspective would start out...
1. Fournette (possibly Allen or Hooker)
2. Cam Robinson
3. Nathan Peterman
4. Corn Elder

1 million percent agree. Bortles sucks in 2017 and he will suck in 2018.
We need a QB in 2017.
I was thinking about this early today. I expect this draft to have 3-4 major first round trades, and I would not be surprised to see Bortles and the Jags be one of these. I was surprised by Marone's comment that Bortles is a complete foundation rebuild first before asking him to do the things he needs to do in order to be a more complete NFL QB. As we're also moving into a 5th year contract, I just do not see the value rebuilding a QB with a fifth year option. Ideally you want to see two years before settling on a longer term contract. To me, it's a risk retaining Bortles. Also, given that two veteran, proven QBs remain on the market as a cheap short term fix, it just makes sense that there is a trade coming.
If Watson falls to the second round I think you consider taking him. But other than that I think you see whats there in the 3rd round. I don't think a QB pick is guaranteed in this draft. Bortles will start as the starting QB in 2017 and will be is final chance to prove he can start in this league.
