It would have sounded absurd entering the season to say the Jacksonville Jaguars have one of the best NFL defenses in 2022. Entering Week 5, though, Jacksonville ranked sixth in Football Outsiders' DVOA defense ratings.6 mins ago
We do have a top 10 defense statistically overall, however, they have given up points on key drives during our losses which needs to be acknowledged. If there are reasons why, like being gassed, that’s fine, but we should be looking at the situations to gain full or better understanding of what’s going on rather than strictly looking at rankings and box scores.
Yesterday there were two drives given up at key times in the 2nd half which drastically affected the outcome. 1 being rookie Stingley making the mistake of bringing his interception out of the back of the end zone and getting tackled on the 2 yard line. You’d think our D would be able to get a stop and give us the ball back with good field position, but that’s not what happened. The tinhorns drove to midfield before being forced to punt. I believe the punt was fair caught around our 8 yard line. That drive effectively flipped the field which was huge for them as it compounded Trevor’s mistake in the end zone.
The 2nd I’ve already harped on elsewhere which was the Walker penalty (effectively a turnover) and ensuing drive down the field for a TD.
Both of these were failures in the 2nd half by an otherwise good defense.
Exactly. They let houston out of being backed up multiple times yday, that being said if the offense hadnt laid an absolute turd of a performance it wouldnt have mattered.
The walker penalty was a backbreaker. I still dont agree with those types of calls personally. I mean the qb had the ball when he grabbed him but whatever.
Its almost like its not even football anymore with those types of calls makes me sad.
This loss really sucked. So tired of losing to not even good tinhorn teams.

And this defense has given up two long drives for the game winner. Good defenses don't do that!!! Has Walker had a sack since week 1? I don't think so! Where is Josh Allen?
Yeah, we didn't lose the last 2 games because of those two things...
Robinson has 286 on the ground. Etienne has 215 on the ground. That's a total of 501 on the year. They technically have the 5th most rushing yards by team in the AFC at the moment. They're 15th overall in the NFL. I think a lot of us are confusing situational football with actual football.
Defense, again, it's kept you in the last two games. 13 points yesterday allowed is not bad. Throwing an interception in your end zone and then throwing an interception in the red zone last week with four fumbles lost is why this team looks like dog [BLEEP] at the moment.
Also, if Lawrence takes care of the damn football and hits those plays early in those three losses we've had this year? The running game gets more opportunities to win the game for you. This also enables your defense to pin it's ears back and get after the QB.

It might not, we don't know until we try. It just shows that we have been able to run the football and we get away from it. Like yesterday when we passed the ball twice as much as we ran it and we got a whole 6 points out of it against the number 31st run D.
Mike Dempsey noted today on 1010 that the last 14 or so offensive plays in the last 3+ minutes were all passes which were dictated by the circumstances of being down late. The run/pass mix during the bulk of the game was better than it looked by end of game but probably still should have ran it more earlier on.
the whole team isn't any good.

We were at the 50 with 2 timouts and 2 minutes left. We still could of ran a draw play or 2 being the defense was playing the pass clearly. We didnt even use our timeouts because of turnover on downs

Even then, a draw to ETN on any of those drives would've probably netted 20 yards. With his supposed game-breaking abilities we should b giving him the ball when the defense is playing loose.
This team has lost because of QB1. Not the defense.

This..
The short yardage running for this offensive design is somewhat based on "push" and man-on-man, but it is really supposed to be on scheme. Defenses seem to sniff out the gaps that the Jags target on short yardage runs plays, and don't believe they will try any type of wham, counter, major pulls, or misdirection sets.
They also normally don't honor Trevor as a runner most the of the time. The number of times Jags run a QB-option and the entire defense crashes the box with zero regard to the play action or "3rd read WR" is astounding.
For example, there was 1 drive Eagles ran against the Jags where Allen was left unblocked on purpose, but had to honor both Hurts/Sanders as options and made the wrong choice 3 plays in a row. That doesn't happen for the Jags, and it makes defending the run in "obvious running situations" really difficult.

And this…
Literally everyone is playing solid, even the kicker who has only missed 1 time all year. Everyone except the QB1. When Trevor plays good football, we win. When he plays terrible, we lose.
Anybody who thinks our defense is not good don’t know what they’re talking about.

Is this opposite day?
The run game is really good when we are actually running the ball. And the defense? The defense is the reason we have had shots to win the game.

It was a 30 pass vs 26 rush split before the last 3 possessions in which they threw it 17 straight times.

You are not wrong.
The OP was frustrated by particular plays where each of these units failed and not looking at the big picture.

Yeah, and that's a terrible way to look at it.
This defense has been on the field so much more over the last two weeks than the previous two before that because the offense isn't sustaining drives. We have lost every single game this year where we didn't control time of possession.
Pederson has to drop this pass first approach and adapt to the team. Run the [BLEEP] ball. It will open the offense up and help Trevor.
The defense is further along than I would expect 5 games into the season with a new coordinator. The last 2 drafts have produced a nice young core of really good young players, look at how much Campbell and Cisco have already improved.
