I highly doubt building a new stadium away from downtown is on the table with all of the money they are investing in downtown. I would imagine they want it all to be a part of the gameday experience.

Absolutely, and in addition to that, there's the expense of building a new stadium from scratch vs the expense of renovating the old stadium, plus, if they build a new stadium, what do they do with the old one?

Tear it down for parking space. I always thought that was a given for old stadiums.
The Swamp in Gainesville?
Not easy, but could be like this.
Step 1. create a place away from the stadium for all team personnel and practice areas. - CHECK
Step 2. Do the improvements in phases limiting the games missed in the stadium. Complete in 2-3 off seasons.

Just put in for a 2nd NFL team in Jacksonville.  Perhaps we can get make a strong bid with the new ownership group of the Washington Football Team to get them to move to Jacksonville and become the Jacksonville Generals or something like that.

That would require the new stadium to be next to the old one, in which case, why not just renovate the old one?   It would be cheaper by hundreds of millions of dollars.
The renovations will be far more extensive than just putting a roof over the stadium. I am thinking it’s going to be more like what we we saw from 1993 to 95, when the old Gator Bowl was torn down (save for upper stands) and replaced with an NFL caliber stadium.

100% ^

It will be downtown without any doubt.
I personally would not want it anywhere else.
That's where it should be.

FOR ANYONE CURIOUS OF WHAT CURRY actually said about the stadium renovations:

https://soundcloud.com/1010xl-92-5-fm-ja...me-5-10-23

Got to the 10:00 minute mark ^

His comments start with:
"Best specualtion..." and he goes on to speculate that the team won't play in the stadium for two years.

The next two questions he fields about the team playing elsewhere he downplays and spins away from.
He even refuses to speculate where they'd play saying he doesn't want to "get out over his skis."

Personally - I'll wait for Lamping/Khan to comment before assuming the renovation would displace the team completely.

This 100%. From the outside looking in it appears to me that Shad is trying to replicate what St Louis did around Busch Stadium and the Cardinals.

On a serious note. The team playing at any venue other than TIAA Bank in Jacksonville is doomed from the get go. There’s just no way.

They’ve also publicly stated that ideally they’ll l play at TIAA as renovations go on.

Again, this story was basically plucked from thin air.

Because of the footprint. Newer stadiums are more vertical and provide better views for even the nosebleeds. The stadium we have now is a big bowl. Changing that into something more vertical would probably cost as much as a new one.
I don't think it is likely at all that they move the stadium. The amount they just put into the practice is more than I would have imagined. It is a lot more than just a practice facility. The offices for the entire organization staff is in the main building. From every coach all the way up the chain to the Executive personnel, that place has basically everything. Not to mention the war room for the draft and scouting office galore, I don't think they are going to take the stadium very far from there at all.

As far as moving them for a short period goes, it is my understanding that isn't on the table either. I'm not the mayor, but I am close with the PM and general foreman who is overseeing the practice facility build from the electrical side. They will probably get moved by miller over to the stadium build once this project wraps up. From my understanding, it is going to be a 3-4 stage process that will allow for bulk work to occur during the off season and less impactful projects that will not get in the way of heavily trafficked fan areas during the actual season. Obviously this will drag the job out a little, but from my understanding it will take 3–4 years from when they pull the trigger to completion.

Again, that is just what i here from people i work with and for at the practice facility build.

Thanks! I think that’s the most reliable information we’ve heard so far.

So the team finally has some good years coming with trevor and the games won’t be here.  We’ve had terrible teams for 15 yrs and now when things finally are looking up, we lose 2 seasons for stadium upgrades.  They need to do everything they can to delay this 5 yrs.

Dude I used to drive 9 hours a weekend(from SC and back) to see us go 4-12, 5-11, etc with guys like Gabbert/Henne at QB. You can make the short drive to Orlando to watch the Jags for 2 seasons if they chose Camping World(a great stadium btw) I would be more upset that reno would take 2 seasons, should only take 1 if they are fast.
They absolutely should move the stadium out of downtown; that place is a barren septic tank and always will be. Get the stadium away from the wasteland and just use drone footage of the city like they do with San Fran.

That would be so much fun.

I think that ship sailed when they sunk money into Dailys place and the practice facility… I dislike downtown as much as anyone and I don’t know if adding hotels or condos is ever going to clean up that area. But I think they’ve invested too much for them to move the stadium away from its current location.

I live close to the intercostal on Atlantic Boulevard and have to drive to the stadium every day for the last six months, and I can tell you it has been an absolute headache going out to eat for lunch around that place and dealing with some of the [BLEEP] that comes with downtown, but I just don’t see how they can move the stadium at this point.

For gator fans maybe
Ok, thinking about this. The reno is not going to happen in 2023. So earliest it could begin is after this season. I cannot fathom 24 & 25 being played away from Jacksonville. Heavens ! if they went on a super bowl run during that time. That would deprive a city which has endured years and years and years and years of poor teams. Makes no sense at all. Being a day one season ticket holder I would be inclined to ... well never mind (but pitchforks and torches are involved)

Renovation would be during 2025 and 2026 and the team will likely not play anywhere but in our stadium the whole time if they follow the model that Khan and Lamping laid out in the last "state of the franchise" press conference.

All this kerfuffle simply stems from the lame duck mayor talking out of his backside.

Is there a chance they decide on a renovation plan that forces the team to play games elsewhere? Sure, it is still possible, but that was not what they laid out last year, and nothing different has been decided or confirmed yet.
