Because they had Desmond Ritter at QB. And your last statement is crap.

2023 falcons defense:

#6 in passing yards allowed
(Jags #25)

After the Jags Defense allowed multiple back up QBs to throw all over them at will last year, this was the change being sought after.

The Jags Linebackers and Defensive Backs reportedly freelancing outside of assignments also implies a lack of trust in the scheme they are running. That had to change.

Neilsen will conceivably have more talent to work with in Jax than he did in ATL.
We'll see what he can accomplish.
He also is bringing in a very impressive staff in terms of experience coaching secondary players in very good defenses.

I like these coaching moves.

The Chiefs allowed the Broncos to score 24 points. Please explain to me how that's a good defense when they allowed 24 points.

The Ravens allowed 33 points to the Browns and 31 points to the Rams. Please explain to me how that's a good defense when they allowed 31 points and 33 points.

Desmond Ridder threw two or three interceptions in that game. It was also in London, our home away from home. I am pretty sure out of that 23 points that at least one of those plays was a pick six.

So, it's more like the offense only scored 16 points against his defense in Atlanta.

This guy is a stud, I am so excited for this season!

I like that he is committed to adjusting scheme to the talent available and finding out exactly how versatile guys are by giving them different challenges during OTAs/Camp. The talk of mixed coverages and zone coverage that looks like man is also encouraging given the state of our secondary.

We saw Caldwell take half of a regular season to figure out he couldn't run as much man coverage as he wanted to.

This won't be the case with Nielsen if he is true to his word. He's going to have a better idea of how much he can ask of his players individually and what their varied skillsets include.

There is also a big emphasis on teaching and he seems to have a clear idea of what techniques need to be taught.

It all sounds great on paper... hopefully he and his staff execute this plan well.
His moustache is impressive. That was my first impression here. Lol. But I do love what he has to say about going out there and hitting people. It reminded me of when we used to say, "welcome to Duval. Prepare to get hit."

There's a quiet calmness to him and confidence to him. Only time will tell. I do like his approach and philosophy though. Attack the ball, be aggressive, get after the QB, disrupt their timing, etc.

We won't be vanilla in coverages most of the time as well from what it sounds like. It'll be interesting to see what they do next month in free agency, but, I am on board with getting rid of Fatukasi and maybe targeting Christian Wilkins or Leonard Williams to play inside for this type of defense.

Wouldn't hurt to see Calais Campbell come back if he's got one more year left in the tank as well. I think by gutting Fatukasi & Jenkins it allows them to do things defensively that are better suited for Nielsen's approach. Antonio Jonhson and Andre Cisco could really thrive in this secondary in 2024.

Yep Ridder threw 2, one a pick 6 to Williams for a 60 ish return?  Our offense didn't do too much better as we only scored 1 TD (30yds to Ridley) The rest of our points were McManus FG's.
I like the hire. At worst he is a slight upgrade over Caldwell imo.
well if he ends up doing well, and improves jags defense into a monster defense,i got the hat for it all ready. I had a special hat made for myself that has teal of doom written on it ,also has AFC south champs 2022
Defense holding the opposition to 3 points less per game would have meant we were in the playoffs

Man, you sure do like to celebrate Trevor and Baalke's accomplishments when it suits you, huh?

We expecting that backflip video when we win the afc wolfie
I’m interested to see the new staff’s evaluation on the young players and if they can be developed. There are plenty of numbers there.

You really should throw that hat in the garbage.  What the [BLEEP] is a teal of doom?

Wolfie has been trying to make that a thing since 2017. As with most of what he does, as soon as he said it the opposite of his intent happened and defense went to crap.

Think the chefs D is good? Spags' D allowed 22 points. We are one point away from being as good as a souper bowel defense

That's as deep an analysis as we need to go here.

You jinxed us with that hat. You had a Matt Hasselbeck moment in overtime. "We want the ball and we're going to score". Never again, Wolfie, never again. Eat salmon or get liquored up like the rest of us on gamedays.

what if you drink liquor from the hat, does that offset the good and bad juju?
I'm expecting us to be active in FA on the offensive and defensive front

I also suspect we will be spending out 3rd round pick on a CB
