I agree, was talking about this in the offseason.
Yes, back on April 1st I started a thread wondering if we'd acquire some 300+ guys and we ended up with Smith and Jefferson. So, I'm glad the F.O. was eyeballing the same deficiency I was and they addressed it. All we heard at the time was that we signed 2 DL from a bad college defense, which I wrote off as "Baalke=bad-bias" at the time. Camp and preseason reports have been good for both players.

I'm glad we got some bigger dudes in the middle. Hopefully they make some impact as rookies.
Gipson is traded to the Seahawks for a late-round pick.
From the limited stuff I saw in preseason I liked how he rushed the passer. Clearly he was not going to make the roster, which makes trading him smart, but it questions the offseason strategy to sign a guy that in the end did not work out. Now we have lost Smooth and Chaisson and basically replaced them with a 7th-rounder (Myles Cole). The team is thin behind Hines-Allen and Walker. Very thin.
The Gipson trade is shocking. We must be very high on Cole or we make a trade for another pass rusher
I don't understand this move. What's Baalke up to

They have Cole, Coleman and Gaziano to choose from on the roster
All three have had moments of praise from the staff and Fans and beat reporters during the off-season/preseason
I think they just didn't see a lot of drop off from Gibson down to the next tier Of guys that I listed.
Gaziano is a Nielsen guy from ATL who was the all time sack leader at Northwestern U.

It's Cole. Plenty of upside. The PFF rankings showed this with limited action. We also have Lacy and Abdullah from last year that are being developed.
Pretty cool how they picked up a guy in free agency and just flipped him for a draft pick.
No bones to pick with this decision at all. There's also a chance Baalke scoops another guy up after more cuts are made today and tomorrow from somebody's practice squad.

Shuffling the deck at DE depth while acquiring a pick.
What's the conundrum?
I wonder if we trade for Reddick. We would have to pay him but it was rumored we wanted Hunter and we would have had to pay Hunter as well. It would be amazing if we could add Reddick

You have a Reddick type in Abdullah already though. De Lugo is overreacting a bit on twitter too. Assumes Armstead at DE more now instead of DT, implying that's a bad thing somehow...
Think about it. It's 3rd and 10 and you have, potentially, this pass rushing package:
OLB - Joshua Hines-Allen
DE - Arik Armstead
DT - DaVon Hamilton
DT - Maason Smith
OLB/DE/EDGE - Travon Walker
You don't have to send all 5 neither, depending on the offense you're facing, it's not like Hines-Allen and Walker can't creep up and drop back into zone coverages or run stunts inside around the amount of beef we'd have inside now as well.

Sorry, but that dude is a child.
And his football IQ is infantile.
The third DE in the Nielsen scheme is not something to freak out about.
How many snaps to you think the young and prime JHA and T.Walker are going to need to be spelled?
Injury to a starter is the only concern here and you don't go moving a vet DT pass rush specialist to DE because you traded away a nobody at #3 DE when you have 3 other nobodies to take his place.
This is a nothing burger aside from Baalke acquiring a late round pick IMO.

Gaziano graded out about 2 points better than Gipson after only one week of being here. That and the other choices made Gipson the odd man out. Funny PFF didn't grade him on pass rush at all despite him ending the Atlanta game with a sack.
I wonder if we trade for Maxx Crosby.

Oh man, if that happens Tua won't survive the first half.

One wouldn't make a lot of rosters and one is an All Pro pass rusher. If they felt they had the cap space and really liked Reddick having Abdullah wouldn't stop me from adding Hassan.
Reddick would be cheaper than Hunter who they really wanted but I think it's what they see in Cole. We need a good pass rusher behind Walker and Allen, if either goes down that guy you thought was your 3rd pass rusher is your starter. I think they didn't have Gipson 3rd or even 4th on their depth chart because I don't think they would have traded him for a late pick if he was. Unless they have someone new in mind they bring in or trade for.
Rumors were getting Aaron Donald out of retirement
What do you guys think of Otowemo? I really liked what I saw out of him in preseason. Strong, has a motor. If they can find a trade part for RRH, that would free up a spot. <br />

We took a guy we signed for minimal money and converted someone not likely to make the roster (your words) and turned that into darft capital.
How is that bad? Sure you'd like it to work out, but if it doesn't at least this way we recouped some value back.
