Something is going on here with all these ships/barges hitting bridges and causing them to collapse.....

Pelican Island Bridge in Galveston struck by barge, causing portion to collapse: officials

Pelican Island is located north of Galveston and is connected to the city by the bridge

A large barge crashed into the Pelican Island Bridge in Texas on Wednesday, causing a section of the bridge, including railroad tracks, to smash down onto the barge, Fox 7 Austin reports.
Officials say there were no reports of injuries in the collision that occurred around 10 a.m. 
However, Galveston County Judge Mark Henry says two crew members did go overboard but were recovered from the water, Fox 7 Austin reports.

According to the interwebs from 1960 to 2015 there were 35 bridge collapses caused by ships. So .64 per year worldwide. 18 of those were in the US. So .33 per year...

They definitely seem to be happening more often, however, without looking at the year by year totals its hard to extrapolate anything from those numbers.. could have been 5 in one year and then nothing for 5 years.
