“I want to do it because I want to be the best I can be. I want to maximize my potential. Who wouldn’t want to? You kind of waste it if you don’t.”
[font=mencken-std]“It’s hard to explain that because I want people to know that I’m passionate about what I do and it’s really important to me, but . . . I don’t have this huge chip on my shoulder, that everyone’s out to get me and I’m trying to prove everybody wrong,” he says. “I just don’t have that. I can’t manufacture that. I don’t want to.” Marissa adds, “There’s also more in life than playing football.”
“Yeah,” Trevor says. “And I think people mistake that for being a competitor. . . . I think that’s unhealthy to a certain extent, just always thinking that you’ve got to prove somebody wrong, you’ve got to do more, you’ve got to be better.”

I miss the part where he says what motivates him. I got all the parts where he says what doesn't motivate him, namely:
- a "huge chip on my shoulder"
- proving "everybody wrong"
And the part where he insists that not only he doesn't want to be motivated like that, but that can can't manufacture that motivation and doesn't want to. In fact, thinking that way is a mistake. As an NFL quarterback you don't "got to do more" you don't "got to be better."
And I heard the part where in his list of priorities, succeeding as an NFL quarterback is valued less than the idea that there is "more in life than playing football."
He wants to "maximise his potential. Who wouldn't want to?" But his quality of play suggests he could be maximising his potential right now.
He does say that he wants "people to know what he's passionate about" but then, as shown above, he spends all the rest of his time explaining what he isn't passionate about. Namely doing more and being better as an NFL quarterback.
It happens frequently in life, particularly in elite sports, that gifted people reach a stage where they don't have the drive and determination to lift to the ultimate competitive level. TL, unfortunately, doesn't have that motivation. He told everyone that before his career started. If his freakish natural talents, particularly a cannon for an arm, can carry him over the top in the NFL then he's content. If those talents can't lift him to the top without a new level of dedication to excellence, well then there's "more to life than playing football."
This, friends, is what is referred to as confirmation bias.
If you have a negative view of the player, you will be more than able to read negative into the things they say. If you do not have a negative view, your bias does not cloud your interpretation.
Do you really want your QB to have to invent some slight by the opposition or media to motivate them to do anything? Do you want him to be some emotionless robit that requires perfection to feel satisfied? Someone who fails to connect with their teammates because all they care about are W's? We've seen over the years that Trevor is not volatile. He keeps his emotions in check, he endures crap situations with aplomb. He's out there putting in work, playing hurt, working with coaches to get the most out of what we got. If you think he's lazy, unmotivated, or uncommitted, I'm certainly going to question your judgment.

He's been worth the 6th RD investment and I hope we can actually retain him for another year or two. I don't think he'll get a massive starting gig in 2025. Sam Darnold is a bit of an anomaly this year. You could maybe make a case for the Jets, tacks or Saints, but, neither of those markets are overly enticing in my opinion. Maybe he'll cut us a hometown break.
I agree that the market for a middling starter is thin, so many teams are committed either through megadeals or rookies playing out their cheap contract that few jobs may benefit us if we wish to keep him around. He can go to another team, but chances are he's not going to be expected to start for an entire season.
At least here, he's pretty certain to get a handful of starts...

Confirmation bias works in both directions. After he was selected in the draft, no one on this board was expecting Trevor to only break the passer rating of 90 once in his first four years. His passer rating this year puts him at 27th in the QB list, and his completion percentage of 60.6% puts him at 31st. The 60.6% is only .7% higher than his rookie year.
If you look at the fact that he has an upgraded (not great, good, or average but upgraded) Oline in 2024 and finally has a clear #1 receiver in Brian Thomas Jr. yet his 2024 stats went
down from 2023
HAS to affect a non-biased opinion of his performance.
PS. I'm not defending the original post, but when I read, "
Do you really want your QB to have to invent some slight by the opposition or media to motivate them to do anything?" The first thing that came to mind was Michael Jordan:
"Yes, Michael Jordan was known for inventing slights and grudges to motivate himself. He would often take slights personally and seek revenge, which was a key part of his competitive drive." Watch the "Last Dance" if you haven't seen it.
PSS. I used passer rating and comp. percentage because it's not affected by his shortened season, but you could extrapolate the other numbers on a per game basis.
[Let me fill the reply in for you: Bad owner, bad coaches, bad WR drops, bad plays, bad running game, bad luck, #becausejaguars, the Jags broke him, you didn't watch the games!!!, and you're a trolling (expletive) Texans fan...]
This thread is dumb and as stated another way for the poster to post his repeated takes that there is already a thread for (analysis of Trevor)
But just for giggles, let’s see how objectively wrong this threads premise is. And we’ll stay on topic, not go off on a tangent about a target of ire like others.
Comparing the offense after Mac’s last four games vs Trevor’s last full 4 starts:
Before:
214 average passing YPG
311 average offensive YPG
1st downs per game average: 18.25
PPG 24.5
64.47 average completion percentage
7.87 average YPA
89.72 average passer rating
2 QB scores per game on average
QB Turnovers per game 1.25
After:
178 passing yards per game
244 offensive yards per game
13.75 first downs per game
10.75 PPG
64.72 completion percentage
6.05 ypa
66.72 average passer rating
.75 QB scores per game
QB turnovers per game 1.5
The offense has performed objectively far worse with Mac under center. He is not the QB we want nor need nor are they the “same” and “interchangeable”. The thread premise is wrong and simply dumb, but consider the poster.
Mac Stinking Jones!?! Are freaking serious?

He completely ignored the very first line. We know he's only interested in bashing the QB, it's the only time and reason he shows up here.
I want to do it because I want to be the best I can be. I want to maximize my potential.
There it is in black and white, motivation. He just ignores it so he can bleat.

You are correct, every assessment and every opinion will have some bias at its core. It is troubling that stats dropped in spite of improvements on the line, darfting a very talented outside threat, and continuity around him via coaches, playbook, and players.
Turnovers were also down, and the question has to be asked, did we/he sacrifice aggression in order to minimize mistakes? Perfectionism can be crippling. We all have the stats, but the root cause is left to opinion without player or coach explicitly stating why we see the downturn.
I immediately thought of UFC fighters with the invented slights. Some of those guys will get worked up over the dumbest thing just to put work in the gym. From the outside looking in, it was laughable. I can see that with MJ, at the time there was almost no debate over the GOAT, and he was practically without peer during his run. He'd almost have to invent criticism just because everyone knew he was far and above the top player of the day. TLaw ain't got that problem, and none of us would think otherwise.

I don't have much to say that hasn't already been said. I want to contribute to the discussion. But the entire premise of this thread is so worthless. Mac Jones doesn't have the arm talent Lawrence has. Mac Jones doesn't have the mobility that Trevor has. Mac Jones seems like a likeable dude. But he's not even in the same solar system, much less the same playing field as Lawrence.
These are just things you can see with your eyes as you watch the games... I'm not even trying to hate on Mac, if I was, I'd use his full given name. But he seems like a dude that is genuine, and is giving it all he has. He's just not a franchise level NFL QB. Whereas, even with all the failures we've experienced over the last 12 months with Lawrence, it's obvious with the right pieces around him Lawrence can win playoff games. It's just that simple.
As I said before, this thread... This is not my kind of thread.

It shouldn't be. In my 28 years of living in the U.S., one thing I know of a certain faction of people is that because they came from constructivism, reality is alien to them. If a player leads the league in turnovers; the only surefire way to guarantee losses, not seeing that and acknowledging its debilitating effects, is akin to voting for say, a Donald Trump as the president of the the self-proclaimed greatest nation of the universe. It's all so comical. It's like saying fabricated racial hierarchy, solely which the nation used to gain economic growth when other nations didn't utilize it so ruthlessly and inhumanely, didn't exist. Sip your simple dim coolaid, and I sip mine.
Is this a political drive by?
