Coughlin's first year was the worst team we've EVER had here and they won 4 games. Coughlin's second year roster is probably about what we have now in terms of talent, let's see if Gus can do anything with it. I'm betting he doesn't.

Making 10-6 one time in our division doesn't prove you're a good coach. However, it does prove that, given enough talent on a team, any coach could win. I would suggest that before we say Gus is a good HC, lets see some consistency and establish a winning record over a few season; then, if we're consistently making the play offs, I'll say Gus is a good coach.

Until then... naw.

Quote:Let's not forget Coughlin left the franchise in ruins (more because of his GM moves/contracts than his coaching), but he finished only 8 games over .500.

That's not what I'd characterize as "amazing." What's amazing is that we remained in Jacksonville after his mismanagement.

The guy who doesn't get any credit here was JDR, who finished only 4 games behind .500 after years of being dogged. Gus didn't get as fast a start as Jack did on the rebuild, but that was nearly solely due to talent. If he gets to 10 games, he deserves more respect than he's currently getting. If we get more of the same, then he'll have earned it. However, folks conveniently want to separate Dave from Gus. Those that do need to be reminded that Dave is "all in" with Gus and reiterated that. A failure of Gus would mean a grave judgmental error on Dave's part. Hero or goat, Dave is highly leveraged here on the success/failure of Gus.

No one is debating Gm success and failures in this thread. It's about Gus being considered a "good coach" if he gets a 10-6 record. I threw out Tom as a comparison. If Gus was also the Gm then maybe we could go there but we can't.

I think you forget that Tom was an awesome talent evaluator and could build a hell of a team then coach it as well. So it's really not fair to bring the GM factor into the argument. It would be unfair for Dave and Gus.

I'm with you, .500 is the minimum I'm willing to accept this season.

Funny how we can say he "IS"  a bad coach without giving him a few seasons with an actual team.
If people are complaining after 10-6 they need to adjust their perspective.

I have my gripes with Bradley and I don't expect more than 8 wins, but I'd let him ride after a 10/6 season without hesitation.

I'm not accepting anything this season.  The question is what will the owner accept?
Quote:Let's say he goes 10-6 and we win the division to make the playoffs. Will you think Bradley is a good coach?

Whether one is a good coach is subjective.   But regardless,  if Gus Bradley leads the Jaguars to the AFC South Title with a 10-6 record this season,   he's very likely going to get a multi-year contract extension offer.
Quote:When has Gus had a winning season?

LOL, that has nothing to do with that.

Absolutely, a coach goes 10-6 with this team full of young players he more than deserves to stay. If you think about it, Bortles, Arob, Hurns, Lee, Yeldon, Linder, Cann, Fowler, Ramsey, Jack, Colvin all have been in the league less than 3 years. These guys aren't even in their prime yet.

This year is Bradley's make or break year. Anything less than 8 wins is a sever disappointment. 9-7 you give him another year, 10+ wins and we have ourselves a coach.

All things still point to Dave still going to bat for him.  I wouldn't think anything changes as long as that's the case.

I was just asking you a simple question. Because you seem to want to point out Some negatives on TC. But the truth of the matter is Gus has a lot of work to do before he can even match TC's worst year. But not to get away from the topic, I'm hoping Gus gets at least 8-8. I don't think that's unreasonable considering the talent that he's been given.

I want Gus to succeed because it means the Jags are succeeding. That's what we all want bottom line.
Bradley has already surpassed Coughlin's worse year and has tied his second worse year in which he had the franchises most accomplished QB, RB, WR, DB, two of their greatest DTs, and greatest DE to work with.
This is simple if Bradley goes 10-6 it will put water on the fire.It will prove that Caldwell was right for being soo patient.. It will make us fans feel at ease and have more confidence in him.. It will be a great thing for the city..
