Yeah, and you factor in injuries and it's incredibly easy to be thin at the DL. Heck, just a couple years ago we were talking about having a dominant O-line with Odrick, Marks, Miller, and Fowler, and look what our line looks at now. The DL is something you have to future proof by constantly adding good talent to it every year.

But that's no different than DB, or any other area of a team.
We seem set at DB now, but if either of the two CBs goes down with an ankle or something, we're back to being an average secondary. If both go down, we're toast.

It is and it isn't.
You have 4 "starters" (i.e. points of failures) on the D-line, whereas your DBs, you typically only have 2 "starters". Also, D-line rotates in and out a lot, as opposed to Ramsey and Bouye are going to be out there every snap pretty much.
That said, I'm not opposed to drafting a DB at 4, since we're in Nickel a lot, but I think there's a strong argument for a D-lineman also.
This class of DBs is WAYYYYYY too deep to waste an early first round pick on a nickel corner.
Even if you play more nickel than any defense in the league, there will be some very good starting nickel-backs in the second and probably third round of this draft.

heck, its looking like tabor is gonna fall deep and sidney jones is gonna be there late too. tabor was being talked about as a first round talent a few months ago. definitely too deep to spend a top 5 pick on, unless you really love lattimore and i think he will be good, but i dont love him that much.

Yeah but that's where we should be looking for 2 of OG/TE/RB also. Assuming Thomas is off the board it's not a stretch to say Lattimore could be such a strong BAP that you hold your nose and take him anyway.
Pick number 4 in draft last 10 years has been offense 6 times..

But this is a deep draft for edge rushers too.
Historically, teams have been able to find pass rushers in the 3rd and 4th round.
Jason Taylor was a 3rd round pick.
Jared Allen was a 4th.
Yannick Ngakoue was a 3rd round pick.
I still don't see how the logic is any different for nickel back vs. DL.
The only thing that justifies the DL over DB is the whole "planet theory."
Quote:We drafted Dante Fowler top 3 in 2015, signed Malik Jackson to a big money deal last year, and people are talking about us taking a DL first this year, to say nothing of signing Campbell this year, and perhaps the second contract of Ngakoue if he continues to develop.
Is that too much money to tie up at the same area?
no. campbell will be old and washed up by then and fowler is looking like a bust
Quote:no. campbell will be old and washed up by then and fowler is looking like a bust
But you are dismissing Fowler after a year of on field work. Suppose Fowler develops into an 9-11 sack guy? Even if you exclude Campbell, you'd still have big money invested into two, maybe three guys in one area. If Fowler and Ngakoue become those 9+ sack guys, then what?
Then you have the best kind of problem on your hands.

that's a big if. why not take a position thats a big question mark instead of a position of strength?

And that is different from picking a CB at 4 how?

1. I would argue nickel back is a question mark.
2. Other positions that represent question marks include LT, LG, RT, TE, and arguably RB.
What players at those positions are worth taking at 4?
I'd rather have too many good pass rushers than too many good corners.
A formidable rotation of pass rushers but average talent at nickel-back is more valuable to me than having three stud corners and standing as is on the D-Line.

OJ Howard

Every day that goes by Howard looks more and more attractive. I'm almost at the point that I'd just go ahead and take him even if Thomas is available.

Yeah he just does so much for the offense. Id pray derek rivers is there at the top of the second, getting both of them would make me shed some tears.

Yep in some other thread I just said my current perfect top 4 rounds is Howard, Rivers/Watt, Siragusa, and whichever of Mack/McNichols/Gallman/Hunt/Hill/Foreman/etc falls to the 4th.
Quote:smokescreen effect for what?? No team is about to trade up over 4 for a running back which is the only offensive position we'd take at 4.
TE?? I agree with above statement OJ Howard.
