Well the polling makes me feel a little better. Now I know there are a lot of us out here who like Fournette but there is a very loud minority of people on here that don't want him for whatever reason and blast it on about every draft thread.

I would have liked to see an option for Lamp. Taking a guard at 4 isnt what I would do, but I think some other people might go for that if you think Lamp is the real deal.

Quote:If his medical is all good, then it's Allen IMO. He meets need and value.

If not, it's pretty tough. I have Adams as the highest rated player left but he would probably have to play Nickel and then slide to SS if Church gets hurt or busts. But SS isn't a need so I'd be surprised if they went that route.

My guess after that is that it's between Fournette or Howard. Both are needs and highly rated guys. I think they'll try to trade back if possible though.

Okay, that's what I would say.  ^^

I would pick Allen if the doctors determine there are no substantial medical issues with the shoulders.  I just think that with the first pick, you have to pick the best player available.

I'm just not sure Fournette is a once-every-5-years type of RB, so transcendent that you'd spend the 4th pick in the draft on him.

But if we pick him, I will trust that DC and TC have done their due diligence and that they have judged him worthy of the pick.
Went with Howard at 4.

Quote:You might consider the fact that Calais Campbell will be 33 years old when Allen is beginning his third season and will either be gone or taking a limited number of snaps.
Exactly.

When Calais or Malik needs a breather, do we have another impact player to replace them?  Nope, so Allen or Thomas would be great in that regard.
Quote:Exactly.

Great point. No positional group rotates more than the DL.
Quote:???????? He's the exact same type of player that we just signed via free agency in Calais Campbell and Malik Jackson the year before. A DE/DT hybrid. How many of these guys do we need?

Seem to remember this as justification for not drafting Leonard Williams....cause he have Marks/Odrick

Yep.  Can't have enough big bodies on the defensive line.

Agree. Williams fell into their laps and they passed. Huge mistake.
Wait. Someone actually said Christian McCaffrey?

What's wrong with that? Plenty of people have him as the best RB in this class. The vote for Cook was far more laughable.

What's wrong with that? We're talking about the 4th pick in the draft. And you must have a different definition of "plenty" than I do.

After all RBs today are nothing if they can't produce like a WR...

lol

I think there is enough depth there for a rotation:

RE - Yannick, Fowler, Skuta

LE - Calais, Malik, Abry, Fowler (pass down)

*DT - Malik, Abry, Day, Calais

*I am listing them all as DTs, as I don't believe we have a true NT and as such I think the team will kind of deviate from what we've run under Gus in that regard.

Last season, Cyp led the team in snaps at 1070. Let's assume that 1070 is a "full" season snap at one position, which gives us a total of 4280 snaps for the front four positions. Malik played 717 snaps last season. Calais played 830. If we actually go with a full platoon of 6 or 7 guys (Yannick, Fowler, Malik, Abry, Calais, Day, rookie DE or DT), that gives us 611 snaps each.

We still have Bennett (to rotate at DT), and Woodard to rotate at LE, though both are long shots.

We still have 8 draft picks this year. With how this team has loaded in FA, there's really not a lot of "clear" starters coming out of this draft. Plenty of picks to go around to bring in a rotation guy either at end or DT.

There's really not a huge need to spend a top 4 pick on that 6th guy in the rotation. Would it be a great luxury for the future? Absolutely. But point is, there's plenty of picks for this team to fill that depth.

If you are saying that about all RB at 4 then you know I am in that camp. If you are saying it about McCaffrey specifically out of the RB then laughing at it is just wrong. It's not hard at all to reason that McCaffrey's athleticism and skill set fitting in to today's NFL better than any other RB in this class.
Quote:For year 1, if I were in their shoes, maybe. Definitely not saying would save/justify their jobs, because he does still have a bum ankle and scheme fit concerns...but you're comparing positions that historically have rookie impacts vs ones that don't.

This "bum ankle" issue makes me laugh. It's a minor surgical procedure to repair, if it even needs to be done.
Quote:Try and trade down

I think they will try to trade down.  I just don't think anyone will be trying to trade up.

I've seen some people suggest loose/lax ankle surgery is minor. However, the doctors I've seen talk about it say it's not very minor at all, and that it has a very high recurrence rate.

All the RBs are different, and they fit different systems.  Personally, I think McCaffrey will be Rookie of the Year, but I don't think he's suited for what we are trying to do.  We need a power back to take the pressure off our QB.   McCaffrey would put MORE pressure on the QB, because the type of routes he runs, he gets open very quickly and needs a QB who can make quick, precise throws.   Not Bortles.

I could see him going to a system like New Orleans and putting up number similar to Bush and Sproles.

But you don't spend a top 5 pick on that type of production.
