Such a shame this young man tore his knee up, because I believe he's the best player in this draft, and I don't think it's close. Everyone knows Smith can cover at the linebacker spot, due to his instincts, intelligence and world class athleticism, but Notre Dame has used him as a pass rusher (on occasion) and he's excelled in the spot, he has the explosion and "bend" to wreak havoc off the edge. According to multiple Notre Dame beat writers, he's whipped future top 15 pick Ronnie Stanley in practice, on multiple occasions. If he's sitting there in the 2nd round when the Jags are up, it'd be tough to pass on him, this is obviously contingent on the Jags doctors medical report.

Yea i don't think he makes it to the 3rd/4th round, the furthest I see him falling is the end of the 2nd. I just hope that knee heals up, seems like a great kid with a good head on his shoulders, easy to root for guys like that.
No way on this kid. Let someone else hope he heals, we need solid, healthy guys ready to contribute whether it's starting, rotating or depth. We don't need a guy in the gym. If he's Dave's top rated guy and available in the 5th-6th round, then OK.

I think there's a good chance Jaylon Smith gets drafted in the 1st Round. Smith seems encouraged about his recovery progress. A G.M. that has relatively good long term security could easily draft Smith in the 1st Round.

With the overall high quality roster the Bengals have, it's the type of pick that would make a great amount of sense for them.

If this guy returns, even next season, some team is going to have a steal. It's a risk, but it will pay off "big time" if he returns.
I would take a chance on him in the 3rd. Only if we drafted Jack in the 1st and edge rusher in the 2nd.

Unless team doctors specifically say he's not going to play again, I wouldn't hesitate to draft him in the fourth round. He was my favorite prospect in the entire draft and sometimes you have to gamble, especially on a player of his caliber.

Difference is that they reported possible nerve damage with Smith. The torn ligaments aren't scaring off teams.

Yeah, I could easily see teams holding off some even with a recheck due to the nerve issue, but if rechecks went well, a 5th rounder seems low. Sure, there is big risk, but the reward potential isn't just big, it is huge. If rechecks went well, I would be happy with the Jags taking a chance in the 4th round. For some other team, maybe a bit higher.

Just because you're playing to win in the present it doesn't mean you have to abandon winning in the future.
Jaylon Smith is a low risk high reward draft pick in the 3rd-4th round, if he falls that far.

4th round, 5th round...at that point it's really semantics. I think the point is moreso that no one has any clue how nerve recoveries will go, The only constant is that they take a long, long time to heal (more of a year to year timeframe than month to month) and you don't know how well they will recover until the very end of that process.
It's extremely unlikely that in the one month since the combine that any teams will have gone from comparing him to Lattimore to being comfortable taking a late 1st flier, as has been suggested.

Wow. If that's the case I'd feel 100% comfortable taking the gamble in the 4th.

How exactly is he low risk? The dude may never play football again. I'd say that's high risk.
