Nah man, can't put anything on the Internet that isn't true

Honestly I always felt he was drafted because of PR instead of talent. So I'm not gonna just dismiss the story.
03-25-2016, 04:01 PM
Almost no chance this is true.

Honestly, I would like to think that he was drafted and spent his short time in the NFL based on his talent and ability. Realistically, something like this is really not out of the realm of a possibility. If the story is true, both the NFL and Michael Sam have only themselves to blame.
The NFL needs to stay out of the public image business and/or PC business. Michael Sam should keep his personal stuff to himself. From the very little that I got to see of him play at the NFL level, it's not out of the question that he used his personal business to leverage himself into the league.

Clearly he didn't have the talent to stick in the NFL, but he was on draftnik radars long before coming out.

Yea, but we're talking about 7th round. These are just undraftable guys you draft so they don't sign with another team. This was near Mr. Irrelevant position. Sam may not have been a great prospect, but not to the point where he was unsignable. What PR message were they trying to send?

I don't see how my comment is "insulting" or "homophobic".
If the article is true, then the NFL was trying to avoid the media fallout that would have ensued had he not been drafted.
If he was on the radar for so many teams, why did he not get drafted sooner?
Why was there a need for him to "come out"?
Me personally, I can really care less what lifestyle a player chooses to live as long as it's within the law. The only reason that anyone talks about him then or now is because of his "coming out". I can't fault teams shying away from him because of the media circus and at the same time, he caused it.

I never understood why Michael Sam went public right before the draft to announce he wasn't straight. I personally would have never said a thing and he would have been drafted much higher. So I do believe that the NFL probably did make a deal with the Rams to make sure Michael Sam didn't go undrafted.

The story was originally broken on Yahoo Sports. It's not just one site reporting it

That's pretty much my point from earlier. It's the fault of him and the NFL if the story is true.
I know that if I was in charge of drafting a player, I wouldn't want the media circus involved with his personal life around the team.

I have a difficult time believing he would have gone undrafted. I never saw him as any more than a 6-7th round pick, but I figured someone would take a chance on him because of his collegiate success. It would not surprise me if the NFL did this to ensure he got drafted because Sam f'ed up PR wise by coming out. Making yourself a media circus is going to cause teams to shy away from you.

When it got to the final day of the draft, and he still wasn't selected, the league probably went to a few teams and suggested they do it for the good of the shield. Otherwise, sending those TV cameras to his home to capture the romantic joy between he and his squeeze would have been a huge waste of time. He had to be drafted in order to assure they got him on camera being selected 8 spots from the end of the draft. It was all a big PR stunt.

Another well made point. Why are there TV cameras in a bottom round draft pick's living room? It certainly wasn't because of his play or ability. It was all about the "tabloid" aspect of the story.

Well I don't watch Oprah and could care less what she has to say. This reality show would have been way too nauseating to watch.

Why am I supposed to be concerned that an NFL team used a low value asset to acquire a player's services?

This seems like a Goodell thing to do.
The league office should not, outside of long established rules governing draft eligibility/ineligibility, manipulate, coerce or otherwise influence NFL teams draft day decisions.
