Quote:Everyone's entitled to their opinions and tastes. I have heard a lot of people say that Metallica is not very good live. It's very possibly true.

However, I saw them live during the "And Justice For All" tour. They sounded terrific that night. But, that was back when they were still fairly young in their existence. It was really good though.

Not every aspect of music is subjective. Pitch and tempo, for example, are objective measures. It's either in time, or it is not. It's either in tune, or it's not. Check out this video. Pay particular attention to "One" starting at 00:12.

How can anybody make the argument that they are the tightest, best sounding band live? But it's been my experience that Metallica fans are unable to look at subject dispassionately.

I am a fan of a ton of rock/metal bands and been to countless concerts. Just saying, in my experience, they are amazing live. When you live on the road like they do/did, of course you are going to have off nights.

You said a bar band played their material better, so clearly at some point in your life, Metallica did something to really piss you off because a comparison like that is silly.

I couldn't care less about Metallica. I just had to refute the absurd position that they are a tight band. And sorry, not only is my comparison not silly, it's fact. You have to know that amateur musicians, that are much more talented than anybody in Metallica, abound. You'd have to be a biased fanboy not to know that.

Clearly more talented. This explains why they are playing in bars and clubs for all you can eat chips and guac.

Wow, you really know nothing, don't you? Some people play music purely as a hobby. And talent doesn't mean fame, either. I thought that would be pretty obvious.

Ok, so now the members of Metallica aren't talented AND don't play their own material as well as a club/bar band. What else? Didn't know Dave Mustaine was kicking it on the Jaguar message board.

I never made any argument or statement about Metallica being the tightest, best sounding band live. I just happened to say that the one time I saw them back in '89, they sounded very good and it was a terific show that night. That's all.

** and yes,, I know about pitch, tempo, being in time and in tune. I have been a musician for 30+ years. Metallica is not the epitome of perfect time and pitch, not at all. They were just very good that one night I happened to see them.

I didn't say they weren't talented. I did say I've seen bar bands play their material with better timing and intonation. You did watch that video, right? It doesn't take much to play "One" better than that. And I'm not buying that "off night" drivel. That's exactly how they sounded the two times I saw them.
I've hesitated to even post in this thread, because I have so many favorites and I revisit many of them frequently, but....

Here's a few that have found their way onto my playlist lately that I hold dear:

Beck  - Sea Change

Radiohead - The Bends

John Scofield - A Go Go

Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin

Allman Bros. - Live at Fillmore East

Miles Davis - Porgy and Bess

Nancy Wilson & Cannonball Adderly

Pat Metheny - Bright Sized Life

Van Halen - 1984

Yeah, I was referring to StoudCrowd1's comment on the subject, but I used your post to make a point about subjective versus objective in regards to music.
Lars Ulrich, trying to play his own music.

Watching their documentaries, it's clear he's the black sheep of the band.  If his father didn't bankroll their start, he'd have no standing and likely tossed from the band earlier than Mustaine, who is much more talented at guitar than Lars is at drums.

Lars couldn't found another band that isn't named Metallica, as Mustaine did in founding Megadeth post departure.  Mustaine got booted for alcoholism.  Lars bullied the others because his dad paid for it.

I love it when folks trash talk about music.

Its ridiculous "my taste in music is better than your taste in music.".Sports rivalry I understand but not music.

I have to listen to [BLEEP] musicians talk trash about other peoples music so frequently I've lost my taste for it.

I've adopted a very open-minded stance. I try to like everything I'm turned on to, but it doesn't always work out so well. I was once very, very discriminate, but not so much anymore.  You probably don't wanna' get me drunk and ask me about Taylor Swift though.

Sure, but nobody in this thread has said that.

I'm not referencing anybody in this thread.
In school it used to be all the rock people or "crusties" as we called them against everyone else just because of their music views. Which when you look back on it, was incredibly stupid.

OK, sorry.

Speaking of which:

"Countdown to Extinction":  Megadeth

I recently listened to the entire "Trick of the Tail" album from Genesis recently and enjoyed it.

Rush's "Moving Pictures" and "Permanent Waves" albums are both great listening.

AC/DC: "Back in Black"

The Who:  "Quadrophenia" and "Who's Next"
I would like to interject and say it is an absolute shame the word "poseur" has all but disappeared from the national lexicon.
