Quote:You guys and your sack stats...
Alualu surely wasn't a run plugger. He wasn't an impact guy getting pressure that would lead to other players racking up the sacks.
What exactly did Alualu do here as an early 1st round pick ? He's a good guy but he contributed heavily to the Jags being the worst team by far in the NFL over the past 5 years.
He was durable, he was a pretty good run stuffer, he was always available, he was a fullback, he's a good football player. He's not a "bum". Nobody has ever said he was worth the #10 pick...well, maybe Gene Smith.
How many players left from before the Caldwell era now? I think 3?

As a 6th round pick, I'd have to say those are some good features that you pointed out.
I just never saw Alualu making any kind of impact. Where was that high motor?
Heck, for a person with similar stats, I'd have to say former Jag and 7th round pick Rob Meier was more visible and made a bigger impact on the field.
I'm not disagreeing that he was NOT a good #10 selection. Just that he's a solid football player.

I don't know why this is so hard to understand. No one thinks he was worth his draft spot.
Gene Smith made absolutely terrible decisions...he really screwed this team over. Isn't the Alualu draft the same as JPP was in? And if I'm not mistaken, JPP was taken after #10.

JPP #15 and Earl Thomas #14.
In any event, at this time I'm just glad we didn't go Tebow and have this pathetic 5 year run. The controversy here (about him destroying the franchise) would have been unbearable. At least we can look back and realize it was pretty much a culmination of everything the front office did.

Pride. Those who bash him have broke pride.

Yep.
Gene picked a 4th round value at #10 overall.

I think it's just Lewis and Poz.

I thought we signed Henne under Gene.
Quote:Lol KY you have no idea what you're talking about.
Funny someone can "wreck" their knee and never miss a game their whole career due to injury.
EDIT Here's the video, prepare urself for the most anticlimactic "injury" you've ever seen.

I'm sure he decided to have microfracture surgery just for the fun of it.

Help clarify, if you could/would, by describing the border between solid player and bad player.
If a distinction can be drawn-admittedly a daunting task-perhaps more can understand.

Alualu was a rookie in 2010.
According to this, he had the microfracture surgery in the 2012 offseason.

I thought this Oklahoma drill injury supposedly happened in his rookie year.
If so, and it was that limiting, why wait to have the surgery until 2012?

It supposedly happened in that first padded practice during the Oklahoma drills his rookie year. That injury was a primary reason why the team stopped doing them to get the fans fired up for that session during training camp. Those drills were like the main event.
I think he played through it his rookie year and season 2 as well before deciding he needed to have the surgery done. That microfracture surgery is a scary thing because you're encouraging arthritic changes in the joint, but I guess when you're basically bone on bone, there's no real alternative. The fact that he played through 2 seasons with that injury is a testimony to his toughness, but also pretty dumb. He should have had the surgery done at a minimum as soon as the rookie campaign was over. I think that cost him in many ways, although I really don't think he was ever going to live up to the expectations associated with his draft position.

Reading the article, it looks like he had the surgery before the 2012 season. The spring after his rookie season would have been 2011. I could see putting off surgery a year to see if the injury would heal naturally on its own.
Ultimately, people who thought he was a bad pick at the time will think the reason he didn't turn out to be a decent player is due to lack of talent.
People who liked his college tape, which imo was very impressive and to me as good as Leonard Williams, will blame the injury. It's hard to be successful when one of your knees is missing its cartilage (hence microfracture).

Surgeries aren't common in the NFL or anything.
Pretty crazy someone can sustain a career altering injury to their knee, only proceed to play multiple season in the NFL before corrective surgery.

Yes, him insisting on trying rest and rehab against doctor advice because of his religious beliefs was a big part of the problem too. If he got the needed surgery right away it might have been different. The whole ordeal was a mess.
