The OL is getting whooped in those plays. He's trying whatever he can to escape and make something happen, but nobody on that OL is blocking anyone. In other words, it's not like he's bouncing outside from the get go like Marlon does... rather, he tried going up the middle but there was absolutely nothing there for him.

So Mack is running up to the LOS and seeing the gaping holes right in front of him and still choosing to bounce it outside? No, he bounces it outside when there is absolutely nothing there for him too. Same thing. 

 

Bouncing outside like that is also a major part of how Dalvin Cook had a class worst 19.9% of his carries wind up as tackles behind the LOS. That's just something you deal with with those types of runners. They aren't your plodding power back that will just lower his head and try to get back to the line.

There was a hole between the tight end and full back on the first play.

 

The entire right side of the field is open on the second play.

 

He should have cut back left and hoped that #87 could get the last DB who's trotting toward every one else. 

 

I can't think of a RB coach who wants their RB to run 5 yards back when there isn't a whole immediately available.

Keenan McCardell is running the WRs and TEs through drills. Wonder if we have scouts at it also.

I wouldn't doubt if they sent a scout. Rodney Adams their WR is an intriguing prospect. He had over 200 rushing yards and 5 TDs this past season along with 800+ yards and 5 TDs receiving

I been huge on Mack for a while now. I was really hoping he could be a day 3 guy, but is looking more and more like a day 2 guy. USF was a very exciting offense to watch with Flowers and Mack leading it.

I mean that description itself even sounds a lot like Denard Robinson too and that really hasn't worked out.

?? You asked how is Mack faster than Yeldon.

 

Drob played only played running back a bit his final year in college. He has all the athleticism just not the skills. Macks a 3 year starter at running back. 

The thing is, a 4.5 40 is fine for a RB like Yeldon, but it's simply not fast enough for a RB to consistently bounce outside in the NFL.

Is he the sort of player you draft and then give the occasional carry, as a "change of pace" and then see how he works out? Or is he someone who can carry an offense from day one?


I think we need someone who can carry an offense and if we want one of those, we have to look at Fournette, Cook or Mixon.

I think we need someone who can carry an offense and if we want one of those, we have to look at Fournette, Cook or Mixon.

Mixon is the only true 3 down back out of all of these listed. Mack is basically a souped up version of Cook athletically. Otherwise pretty similar stylistically. 

I really don't think Mack is an upgrade over Yeldon.

Yeldon was drafted in the worst possible situation for a RB ...that is, he's always had to share carries so he's never had a chance to be fed the ball, and he was part of Oley's scheme which largely neglected the RB position. I actually feel that Oley is a great play caller, a passing game guru and an elite QB Coach, but he's by far the worst OC regarding the running game. He's totally clueless when it comes to running the ball and doesn't really want to run at all. Despite that, I've seen many very impressive rushed from Yeldon including several where's he made yards by using his footwork to create holes where they otherwise did not exist. I've seen it claimed that he doesn't do this, but he's actually pretty darn good at it. I've also seen him scamper for huge runs by busting through the thinnest of lanes. Granted he's not your breakout threat like Corey Grant because DBs are catching Yeldon from behind, but Yeldon can be very slick, and if he actually had a game plan designed for the run you would see it... rather, you wouldn't be able to miss it.

As the guy who hates RB at 4 more than anyone, I truly hope the front office agrees with you. If there's one quote from Dave that I hope was honest more than any other this offseason, it's the one where he said he is very happy with Ivory and Yeldon as our 1a and 1b options for the running game.
